After installing windows updates on my pc before shutting down yesterday and when I switched on my computer on later on yesterday, while it was booting this message came up:

WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT
    <windows root>/system32/hal.dll

ive tried getting into it from safe mode and an option that says that it will revert back to the settings that last worked the previous time but still the same message comes up...

Anyone know what I can do to fix it?

Whats your OS? When updating you should always do a back up.

Plenty of advice in this thread its long but worth a read

Put the file hal.dll (132k) on a boot floppy, and then boot the PC from the floppy. Copy the file to C:\windows\system32\

If your unfamiliar with DOS, the syntax for copying the file is:

    copy hal.dll C:\windows\system32\

So type that at the A prompt and press enter:

    A:>copy hal.dll C:\windows\system32\

When it's finished, you should see the message:

    A:>1 file(s) copied

Remove the floppy, cross fingers and reboot.

the shop that i gave it into just gave me a ring saying that they could reinstall windows but I would need to enter " a serial number" which is supposedly the computers serial number when I got it back.
I got the computer ages ago and I dont have any record of such a number.
Is there anyway that I could bypass it by entering in a number other than the right one?Anyone know of somewhere where I could get such a number?

the serial number is the product key for windows. It would normally be on a sticker on the side or bottom of PC, or on the Windowx XP install CD case or cover. Sometimes it is stuck to the Windows manual.

What will prob fix it is if you boot the PC with the windows XP install CD in the CD drive. Press a key to boot from CD what it asks you. Then follow the instuctions on screen to install windows. It will search for existing versions of windows and should detect your current install. It will then ask if you would like to repair this installation or do a fresh install. choose repair. This will hopefully fix the problem and also keep all your data etc intact.
