Monopod Vs Tripod

Taking my 350D on hols with me this year to namibia
Now normally I travel very light no tripod (except for a minipod).
I'm trying to weight up my options, I don't want to carry around a tripod and was thinking of a Monopod as being a good compromise.
What are the pro/cons for the two options.
Also, in low light conditions, 1/60 th of sec is the lowest you should go for holding the camera in your hands while taking a shot, but if using a monopod, how long can you keep the shutter open? Like 1/30 th of a sec for example??
