    Hi all,

Going travelling for the year and was wondering what the best insurance wold be to get.

I have got quotes from €170 from fyi.ie to €500 from axa

The only reservation I have from getting from someone like fyi.ie is that I havent heard any recommendations and would they pay out if I ran into trouble

Has anyone any experience with getting this type of insurance

Trailfinders have package as well and they give you an on line quote.€509 for 12 months worldwide excluding North America. I dont know how good they are insurance wise but they gave me the best package flight wise

Ye but its €509 - bit steep and I dont know how good they are - as regards if I have to claim

I know it is steep enough but I am basing it on the fact that they do a lot of backpack deals so I assuming they safe enough. Basically I am like yourself and I have very little information on who provide the best deals so unless I hear some horror stories I am going with them. The deal that you got of €170 does seem on the low side to me.

Don't skimp on insurance. If you take out a policy with an 'unknown' insurer, at the least ensure it covers repatriation, ambulance cover (i.e. not just hospital).

A relative works as a nurse receiving calls from people who are abroad in bother and she has some gruesome stories of people inadequately covered.

I took out the trailfinders one last year and it is fairly comprehensive - you get what you pay for. I did claim for something minor and they were pretty prompt in dealing with it - though they were just telling me I wasn't getting anything!!

I'm on currently on a RTW trip of 10 months, and while I haven't claimed as yet (fingers crossed), I took out policy with World Nomads for eur325 which included specific coverage on my video iPod, and was highly recommended on a number of backpacker sites, including Lonely Planet, as long as you are travelling through Australia as part of your itinerary.

    www.worldnomads.com
I hope this might be of some use to you.

I've been looking around for year long insurance for the last month or two, and I'm going to have to book it in the next couple of weeks.

I think I've narrowed it down to 2 options:

www.fyi.ie are from Accident & General, its a new site but it seems very impressive. I'm not great on policies and coverage, but their top-end package looks like it has everything. I know a previous poster expressed reservations because they were new, but it's just an A&G travel insurance site.

The other option is with Blue Insurance. This is through Sayit Travel, and the plum deal with them is that they'll cover the cost of an Oz visa if you take their insurance - that's €360 all in. I can't find details of their policy coverage online anywhere, you need a log in for their site www.blueinsurance.ie - I'm going to have to get Sayit to send it to me.

Cost of FYI is €240, and thats for their top level policy
Blue is €360, but includes Oz Visa.

    Any thoughts are appreciated?

The one I always use is the BMC's insurance. It's specifically for people who are more adventurous and they are well used to dealing with the kind of scrapes you can get yourself into while off galavanting. Check here for a list of the policies they offer. The only thing is that it's all in sterling and you have to be a member to avail of it so that adds to the cost. I'm currently on the Alpine and Ski policy and it gives great peace of mind. They'll even recover your body if it all goes pear shaped :D
I have to say I've been lucky so far and never had to claim off them. But whatever you pick make sure it covers the kind of activity you expect to be doing.
    Enjoy the trip!
