Just a quick question. What is the pont of the last accessed time when you right click a documen and go to properties. It just shows the current time.
This just confused me, seems to have absolutely no point.

Cos you just accessed it by clicking it i think.

    Doesn't mean last opened.

Yes I know why it does that but how could you possibly look at the feature without doing that, hence pointless?
I would have thought it would show the time before that.

Explorer does it -but perhaps not all the time(not sure). Other programs may be able to view the properties of a file without modifying it (Useful for several reasons). To disable it , try:

    Regedit
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
Add a new DWORD value: NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate.
Set the value of that subkey to 1.

Usual disclaimer: Make a backup, ghost image, system restore point, prayer note, etc.

This it, thanks. It is just natually disabled on my D: drive. That also makes no sense to me.
How can you actually query the last access without updating it to the current time?

it seems to be whenever the file is looked at, so if you have any of the extra properties tabs open (such as author), explorer will 'access' the file to get that info. For example, I have some movies, whose access time is 13:03, as thats when I browsed to the folder, and explorer went through the movies getting their resolution and length.

It is a pretty 'dumb' thing from a user's point of view, but its probably just a property of a record being accessed by explorer rather than anything designed for certain functions.

do you have that thumbnail thing enabled that shows a bit of the file when you click on it? that'd do it

    that doesn't happen to me

You can have it turned on in windows explorer allright. Never bothered myself. It's under view->choose columns...

As commander vimes pointed out though...if you have the thumbnails thing on, that might skew it.

Wgere is the option to turn that thumbnail thing off?

    tools->options->use windows classic folders

Also make sure the default view is set at anything but thumbnails. You can set this for all folders in tools->options->view->apply to all folders

I assume you can access it via the VBA object model, or even simply the file system object. Useful if you are programming functionality like Content/Document managment, revision history, baselining etc, recording changes, edit approval. Etc.
