With a bit of luck someone here might know what to do. Has anyone ever had to get a Garda Clearance Cert for a job before? They basically prove that you've never been convicted etc. The above link seems to be old coz I rang them up and the office has moved to Thurles but it still takes 40 days. The thing is I need it for a job ASAP,within the next week or so, and can't wait 40days!!! Has anyone one been in a similar situation? Does anyone know of another/quicker way to get one? :(

Nope dont think theres a quick way, had to get one for a 6 week course on returning to the workplace, i was finshed the course and had got a job before it came. You might try and see if there is any quick verbal check the employer can do while waiting on the cert

I'll give the 'verbal check' idea a bash, thanks. It might just work....

"Usually" if it is requested then the company makes it a condition to the contract (like a reference check which they can do months after you started your job). Check with your employer and explain the situation.

Any employer that requests such a cert, would know that it takes 40 days. On the other hand, if you applied for a job that said "Garda Clearance required", then silly you for not going and getting one :)

It's likely that they may just want you to get the form , have it filled out, and then hand it in to the company. Thats how ny checks have worked out.

no. i actualyl got one for different reasons 2 months ago.
took about 20 days to come through.
very simple affair, just head down to garda station with your birth cert, passport and whatever other bits and bobns they require, with photocopies, and a self stamped addressed envelope and they will run through the form with you at the counter.
a couple of weeks later, it pops through the door.

i wouldnt worry too much about it.

I had to fill in one of these for a security job a few years ago, but my employer took care of it - i.e. they just want the signed form, they'll carry out the check themselves. They provided the form along with their own standard application forms too.

Hi Jix. From what I know the Gardai don't do clearance checks apart from health board workers. I notice from the "garda clearance" link in your post that it mentions the data protection act. This is not a Garda clearance check it's merely a request by you to search their computer system for your own information, not for an employers. Under the same act you can request your local video shop to search their system to see what movies you've rented in the past, it's pretty meaningless. Everyone who has replied so far seems to think it means much more than that. What did the Gardai in Thurles say to you when you told them you had been requested to get police clearance?

Basically I was told that it would take the 40 days but yeah, it's not so much a Garda Check but a Data Protection Act Cert that we get from Thurles. The job is through a UK crowd and over there they have Police Check Forms that are easier to get a hold of afaik. I ended up doing something similar to the verbal reference idea and got a written character reference letter from a local station. They thankfully didn't mention that incident with the llama and the nun.
