I have a windows 98 pc that once belonged my school and was on a network where I needed a log in name and password to log into it.
I acquired one of them and although the computer is no longer on a network it still asks me for a log in name and password which I do not remember...
Usually by hitting "esc" or "cancel" on other machines you are able to use other computers but this is not the case with this machine...how come?what can I do to overcome the problem?I want to eventually install Xp on the machine
    any help is appreciated...thanks

Password files in 98 had the .pwl extension. boot into safe or if comfortable with dos then use that, search for *.pwl in the windows directory (IIRC) and rename them to *._pw or some other extnesion that you want to use but isn't used by other programs, reboot normally and when you go to login it will ask you for new passwords. Ahhh Win98 the innocence... LOL

Would follow jhegarty's advise too, but make sure you have a Win98 OS disk handy if you want to reinstall the networking as it may ask for it.
