extension lead to get broadband throughout house?

Am bit of a luddite on tech matters, so bear with me.
I have wireless broadband on my laptop. I want to use internet in different rooms in my house. I know that I can get a router and go the wi-fi route, but I am wondering if you can get a long extension lead instead, ie, I had a long extension lead when I was on dial-up, enabling me to use laptop wherever i wanted in house. The new, fatter lead fitted by my broadband provider is much shorter, so i have to stick to one room.

Can you get similar extension leads that would enable me to use anywhere in house, or is the signal only available in the current room?

In other words, can I avoid having to fork out for the router by getting the lead, or does it not work that way?
    Thanks in advance

ha ha. Love your use of "extension lead". It's def old skool! :p

To answer your question, I think what you are looking for is a really long ethernet cable. There is a guy in the Shop forum that will make you up a lengthe of cable. Let him know long, etc.

    Thread is here.

if you already have wireless broadband on your laptop why do you need the lead ? or do you mean you have the option of using wireless on your laptop but you're currently using a (short) ethernet cable plugged into your broadband router ?

OP doesn't have a wireless router or access point. So while he has a wireless card in the laptop, it has nothing to connect to. Hence the use of the ethernet cable which presumably connects directly to dsl modem.
