Has anyone registered windows xp service pack2 by phone? was just wondering if they ask too many probing questions about its origins ?!!;)

The version of xp I'm reinstalling was originally registered via the web at work but now where the pc is I don't have accsess to the internet. I've got all the correct codes etc.

    Any info would be great.

I ordered XP service pack 2 on the Microsoft website with no questions.

As far as i know Microsoft does not restrict SP2. There should be no 'questions'

You can download and load later or order the CD at the following link.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

I already have the software, and its running fine on my pc but if you don't register it within 30 days it locks up so the question is about the actual questions the microsoft representative asks when registering via phone.

As long as you have all product key I think that's all you need.

Just be aware that if it a single licence key you would need to uninstall the original copy of XP from the other PC to be legit. And if it is an OEM licence you can't transfer it to any other machine. Just so you know the legalities of this.

I've loaded SP2 on at least 10 systems there was never a requirement to register.

I dont know why you have to. Unless you have to reg. XP itself not SP2

Registering XP over the phone is automated. You won't talk to a live person at any stage... unless you are having problems.

I've done it a few times for work. You basically key in your OEM/licence key on the phone and then you are given numbers to enter.

All very easy and painless :)

I think OP is saying he wants to register XP. It just happens to be XP SP2.

I've rang them once and they asked no questions. My copy was legit though ;)
Seriously, i doubt they'll ask you anything.

If you have to talk to a MS rep, you will be asked:

(read out ALOUD in an indian accent)

please call out the ID generated on the activation screen
please call out the cd key that came with the installation CD
is this the first time for activation of the microsoft product...say yes
on how many PCs is this product installed...say 1 only
you maybe asked, the county of origin...blah what ever

Thank you for calling microsoft...have a nice day!

Pretty straight forward. I've done it a fair few times.

Something else worth mentioning, you cant get very far on the updates site with out activation. So, a way around it is, get automatic updates going and wait till the yellow shield appears in the icon tray. Dbl click and choose the updates that way. A nice lil work around.

The automatic registration won't if the hardware has changed (different PC) and you'll need to talk to someone. But if it's an OEM licence, this may not work either as the software is tied to the hardware. If everything is OK, the only question they ask is if the software is still installed anywhere else, because it's not supposed to be.
