Return flight from different airport in Australia?

I'm considering flying out to australia for about 2ish weeks from the 10th of May. I'm thinking of flying into Sydney and out of Brisbane. As two one way flights, this is very expensive. Computers don't understand what I'm trying to do. Will a human operator allow a better price if I use their airline both ways? I'm essentially doing a return trip, but at different airports.

Also, where do you look for flights? I tried lastminute.com, but that's frustrating because I can only check one date at a time, and my dates are flexible. Any pointers? austravel.ie looks good, but try and get a flight for as cheap as they say on the right, and you'll consistently get zero results. I need a bit of a crash course on this stuff...

    Thanks for any help.

A few years back I few into Melbourne and out of Sydney and got a good price. I booked through Trailfinders - they're on Dawson Street. You can't book online but they're very helpful over the phone. I've used them a few times - if you're flexible on travel dates they're great for finding good deals.

What you need is called an "open-jaw" booking. You'll probably have more luck with bookings of this sort if you speak to the airlines telephone reservations centre, or a travel agents. Travel websites don't seem to bother with them, or handle them all that well

Thanks for the info and ideas.

As it turns out, I'm not going to be going away as I thought. I'm going to keep the idea in mind though, so I may be back.
