I really want to hear the Orgazmo commentary, apparently Matt Stone and Trey Parker were drunk while they were doing it and just took the piss, more and more so as the film went on.

Spinal Tap. However, I'll need to check out Airplane now that you mention it.

Yeah Spinal Tap wins, it's like a whole new movie!
Although the younger guys on the LOTR cast comentary was entertaining enough.

I've been meaning to give Spaceballs commentary with Mel Brooks a listen... and maybe The Dinks commentary, but I'm not sure how long I could put up with it... :p
Must listen to Blazing Saddles and Airplanes ones too.

As for TV, Simpsons and Futurama commentaries are cool.

The Thing has an amazing commentary. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter sitting around, drinking a bottle of tequila. You're listening to two awesome old buddies reminiscing about an amazing movie they made together.

And God help me, I really liked the commentary on Old School. I swear, that thing is funnier than the movie itself.

Best for me is American Werewolf in london by the 2 actors.
Most disappointing was Braveheart. My favourite film but Gibson's commentary was p1ss poor.

I haven't heard that one but I've heard their drunken commentary on Cannibal The Musical. The highlight is a drunk Parker talking about how is ex left him for some banker

Parker: "She left me for a banker and now I'm worth 10 million dollars. Whoops"

The Cannibal The Musical commentary rocks. It's so so funny.

They all got together, years later, now they're famous (well... Trey and Matt are...) and got drunk watching the film and remembering all the funny stuff that happened. Parker's translations of the Japanese Indians, and pointing out when Dian Bachar jiggles his car keys (lol). Best. Commentary. EVAR.

I have Orgazmo at home, I didn't think that had a commentary though, will check later.

Any Kevin Smith commentary. They're freakin' hilarious and usually consist of people taking the piss. I especially like the one (can't remeber which movie) that starts with Smith introducing everybody as if they were doing the Fight Club commentary

Which reminds me: the Fight Club commentary is class. As is the one on the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko. The one with Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith (him again!!) In fact I think it should be a requiremnt that any boring commentators should be accompanied by Kevin Smith. Just to keep things entertaining.

The Rodriguez commentaries are usually worth their salt also.

Worst i've heard in a while: Neil Jordon for Company of Wolves. I feel a blood-turnip metaphor coming on.

**EDIT: Oh and the Ghostbusters one is cool in a Mystery Sciene Theatre kinda way

Spinal Tap is probably the king

I like the Star Wars ones actually. Each movie usually has the highlights of about 5 commentaries spliced together into one single commentary so you're getting Lucas/Actors/Editor-Sound/ILM folk all togther presented at the appropriates cues.

First when I saw this method I thought "what a rip off!" especially when back around 2001 onwards some DVDs were offering sometimes four full isolated commentaries (eg Se7en).

However in retrospect I've come round to this way as I've found very few commentaries (esp "serious" commentaries) have ever been interesting enough for me to go back an review. But I've actually watched the SW comms a good few times since.

BTW (not a movie) but if you get a chance you should check out the 'commentary' to the TV show Brass Eye. It's something else (literally)! :)

All 3 (maybe it's 4) commentaries of Cabin Fever are excellent. So much fun. There's a great story that Roth brings up in each separate commentary (with different people) about a guy who shot off a gun in a bar they went to one night.

You are kidding right? The commentary on the 2-disc boxset with the director and the actors? It was terrible! They're boring and you can go for a good 10 minutes without any of them speaking. The whole thing was obviously recorded separately for each person and then pieced together. It's so crappy.

The commentary for Get Shorty is pretty good is you're into film making. Barry Sonnenfeld explains a lot of the tricks that were used and it's really interesting.

Also, I agree with The Thing commentary. You can tell the two really loved making that movie.

LOTR EE commentaries are by far the most informative and entertaining selection of commentary tracks I've heard.

    My favourites:

    - Joss Whedon on 'Firefly'
    - Tarantino on 'True Romance'
    - Donnie Darko (both the original with about 20 people and the Director's Cut with Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith)
    - Almost Famous (Cameron Crowe and his mother, Alice)
    - The Office Xmas Special (Gervais / Merchant only recorded commentary)
    - Fight Club
    - Seven
    - Evil Dead

Seven? Seven?! That's even worse than Fight Club.

I've heard the one on Starship Troppers 2 is pretty funny. Also i think it is Total Recall thats meant to be good with Arnie saying this like "I totally can't remember doing this scene, seriously". i tink its recall anyway

Darren Aronofsky has done two excellent commentary tracks. Particularly on Requiem for a Dream.

Kevin Smith's are excellent if a bit heavy on humour. Which is great, but sometimes I like to hear about the film too. Dogma has a second technical commentary which is also excellent.

Already mentioned but Almost Famous was brilliant too.

Wes Craven has done good work on his older flicks. There's a great cast commentary on the Last House on the Left DVD where one of them (who was a porn star) constantly mentions how **** he thinks the film is.

The LOTR:EE commentaries were good on Fellowship but by the time they got to Return of the King I couldn't stand the sound of Jackson's voice. The core cast though were entertaining as ever.

The Criterion "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" has an Audio commentary featuring director Michael Powell with Martin Scorsese.

While I hated the film they made of Sum of all Fears, I enjoyed hearing Tom clancy rip the film to shreds in the commentary.
