    Hey all,

does anyone have any opinions on the new insanity Act?

Seems like this was long overdue - the main elements of the Act as I see it are that:

    1. Introduction of defence of diminished responsibility
    2. Power taken away from Minister for Justice to determine the detention period of insane people (board set up to independently review the situation every 6 months).

    Any other views/opinions?

It is long overdue imho. It is a bad thing to have the period of detention being determined by a politician who will be pandering to the public opinion to court votes. Look at the power of the HS in the UK. It will be much fairer to have an outside body review sentances.

I think overall it is a big improvement.

wow, I didnt even notice this. Any changes concerning Gardai?

As for politicians, Im not so sure its a bad idea. I certainly support the long detention of Brady and Hindley and if the politician is pandering to the public then the detention would reflect what society actually wants. On the other hand, is this justice or revenge?
