Why do we as a race feel the desire to celebrate our 'birthdays'?!

It doesn't mean anything!!! Life begins when you are conceived. That is when the first glimpse of you entered existance. When you die, that is when 'you' leave existance.
Surely these are the 2 dates we should concern ourselves with??!!

I mean because of leap years, the fact that there isn't exactly 24 hours in a day and all these kind of variables, doesn't this mean that there is a high chance that your 'birthday' isn't even the day you were born?!!

And so what if it is anyway?! Whats the point?!! I think it is a purely psychological thing that we have invented to help us cope with our (relatively) meagre and abrupt lives on this planet!!

PS im just thinking on a large scale
Would it make you feel meaningless?
The same way that if there were no religion, 85% of the planet would feel meaningless.
Its all just an invention to help us cope.
    What do ye think??!!!

    someone sounds a bit bitter.

Its just a chance to celebrate our loved ones each year, to celebrate each other being alive. A bit of fun, of course it doesnt really mean anything.

So no-one turned up at your birthday party then?

    I know.

    I'm not being bitter.
    Its just an observation.

Does it not bother anyone else that all of these things (religion, beliefs, stuff like my previous post etc) are kind of just a shelter from the real world??!!

I mean we go around our lives thinking about what we'll give up for lent, whats on Network2 at 9 tonight etc etc , when none of that stuff is relevant!!! imho

And you cant just turn around and say "someone needs a hobby" or "you're just being bitter" cos whats the point in not thinkin bout this stuff??

If you ask me, this is probably one of the more relevant posts!!

Just think about it, and try and understand the scale of everything out there, compared to oour little lives.

PS im not a pessimist...I love life!!!! :D

Sick for your kids pants on fire(3/10, inplies dishonesty).

pants on fires son: Alright Dad its my 13th birthday today I don't suppose you got me a present this year
pants on fire: Clear off you meaningless boy. You mean nothing to me.

pants on fire son: Hey ya dad just to let you know i'm getting married tomorrow. Don't suppopse you fancy coming.
pants on fire: Bah, by entering into a union of marriage you are merely doubling your sense of meaningless in this pathetic world.

You make me sick pants on fire. Your apathy and lack of joy for life make Pighead want to vomit.

If we don’t feel the need to worry about things like this then you shouldn’t really be getting mad at us for not caring about when our actual birthday is.

Some people have more important things to worry about tbh!

Exactly. the only person who probably sees it as such a big deal is Mr "Pants on fire". Its an excuse to have a beer, to catch up with mates.
I dont think the rest of us "conformists" spend too much time thinking about it

You could go around thinking like that alright, saying that life is rather irrelevant in many ways. I mean there 6 billion people in the world and your just a small drop in humanity. But the important thing is not to think about it that often. You ought to have a few people in your life that you care about and feck the rest. (Well not feck the rest but get your priorities right)

Of course when you think about it, religions/traditions/habits are a shelter. But you cant think deeply about why you do things all the time.

To answer youre first post, many people find it good to remember someone thats close to them and show how much they mean to them. Birthdays, even if its as simple as just wishing them a happy birthday, are part of this. Doesnt even matter if you have a party or get presents or even if it is your birthday(due to leap-years or whatever) Its as much for them as it is for you.

I'd say thats a pretty close assessment. Its almost definitely linked to a recognition of mortality.
Would it make you feel meaningless?
Why? I know I'm mortal. Knowing that some traditions spring (at least in part) from people dealing with such an issue doesn't effect me at all. I don't celebrate my birthday because I'm dealing with my mortality - I just am of the opinion that this is where the/a root of the tradition is.
The same way that if there were no religion, 85% of the planet would feel meaningless.
85% of the planet believe or have faith. By definition, the only way you could have no religion would be if they didn't have this belief/faith. That would require that their mindsets and so forth be different than it is now....which means there's no way of knowing whether or not they'd feel meaningless.
Its all just an invention to help us cope.
What is? Religion? Some people think so, but its a far more tenuous and arguable line of reasoning than the "birthdays spring from mortality" argument.

    What do ye think??!!!
I'm wondering why you think the world is so stupid. Even if religion is just a delusion, you have still recognised it as a means to cope. Are you saying the less stupid thing to do would be to cope less well?

I love my birthday! I start counting down the days when it comes to the month! It's a day dedicated just to you.. just enjoy it! Don't over analyse!

we celebrate birthday's because we can. most of us are stressed from school, college and/or work... so when the opportunity comes to have a laugh, we take it.

it's my friend's birthday tomorrow, for example. i will be drunk.

Some Joe, several thousand years ago sat down and thought up all these meaningless things you talk about, religion, birthdays, beliefs for the very reason you said, life without them is meaningless. We as Humans need diversions, hopes, dreams, things to look forward to and Gods to pray to. What would we do without them. We would be no more than insects or animals, the only goal in life would be to feed and breed. So you can ponder for the rest of your days, live life without diversions, hopes and dreams and figure out what it all means, and if you do let me know.

    Escapism, Celebration, etc etc...

When you look at it... absolutely everything is pointless... meaningless in the face of an incomprehensably large universe...

that's why people tend not to look at it for too long... it's interesting to delve into these big matters once in a while... but delve too deep and it messes you up...

It's the people who don't realise this that go mad and become extremely depressed... The best we can do is enjoy what we have... whatever that is

basically just live... as was said before... all these little celebrations are part of hundreds of years of human, cultural and social development... because we felt the need for most of them... It's nice to appreciate, but not be bothered by that once in a while...

    then get pissed.

Of course life is meaningless... And the object of the game is to fill it up with as much crap as possible.

Probably the most intelligent thing anyone has said on this post.

All you people that keep telling me that I need to "empty the bath and unplug the toaster" and all that kinda crap, lighten up for &*$% sake.

I just posted a thought that I had once-off. Was interested in what people thought!! Simple.
Its not like I go around thinking everything is meaningless etc !!!

    well....sometimes
