Has anyone tried the latest Beta of IE7?

I am not a Microsoft hater, and use XP, Word, and Outlook on a daily basis, but this program seems to take the biscuit. It crashed twice in the 5 minutes or so I was using it. Even back when Firefox was called Firebird it was far more stable.

Also, what do people think of the address bar being immovable (from what I can see) at the top. Cleartype also seems to be enabled, and I cant figure out how to switch it off.

    Btw download is here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

Takes a little getting used but I like it, all the betas I've tried have been rock solid for me.

It is true the top most bar with the search box and address bar is not movable.

To turn off cleartype go into tools->internet options & advanced under multimedia is the toggle for cleartype but why would you want to switch off cleartype anyway text looks horrible with it off.

I do like their tab implementation with the mouse over close boxes that is something I would like in Firefox.

The latest beta is also a bit faster at rendering pages though overall some nice improvement's it's not enough to lure me away from Firefox+extensions.

There is actually an extension for that, but unfortunately I can't remember what it's called.

Having had a quick look at it I can say I don't like it. In Firefox you can close tabs with a middle click anyway so the close button is superfluous.

When IE7 starts for the first time it comes up with a dialogue about a Phishing filter, which I choose to disable. Then, looking in the security settings I see that it wasn't actually disabled at all. This seems to submit information about your browsing habits to MS. It doesn't feel very right either, just the look of it seems wrong. Not being able to move the address bar is another thing. A bit silly really for them to stick it in place.

Firefox all the way I think.

I hate cleartype, but probably because I am still in CRT land. Having said that i prefer it off on my laptop too.

I had to uninstall it, it was causing serious stablility issues with the system.

That's not quite correct the phishing filters automatic check is whats disabled when you choose that option which means it doesn't auto check every website.

What you saw in the control panel was that the auto check was turned off but the anti-phishing feature was not totally disabled this means if a user wants to check a site that can do so manually by clicking on Tools->Phishing Filter and the "check this website" item.

Nothing is sent back to Microsoft unless you tell it to.

As for the UI yeah it's hard to come to terms with it after IE6 for so long but it does grow on you with use if you give it a chance.

    Tabbrowser Preferences?

Also, middle click (in Windows at least) on a tab will close it in Firefox.

How does IE7 shape up with regards CSS standerds? I've heard it's going to be quite a headach to undo, or redo, IE5/6 hacks for IE7 compatibility. Although I suppose if they fix it it'll be better in the long run.

Yeah Microwinblow$$$ (bill gates is satan tbh, down with corporations etc etc)

Fix the bug so Richard Dower can press 3 keys to do the same thing he could do with only 2 keys, or else he wont give you any more money...even though IE 7 is free.

    Yes :p

You can add it to their IE 7 bug submission bug list if you're really bothered by it...don't know the link and i'm too lazy to find it, but it should be easy to get using google.

Does control+alt+4 work for anyone else? Doesn't work for me (in anything, not just IE7)

    Alt Gr all the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Serbian

Ctrl + Alt + 4 works for me just fin€.

I tried the IE7 beta but annoyingly it completely replaces IE6. Being a Web Developer by profession, I need to test things in IE6. I know there are methods of getting the Beta to run stand alone, but I really couldn't be bothered with it at the moment.

As for it being difficult to undo hacks, you shouldn't be using hacks, you should be using IE Conditional Statements. Allows you to target any version of IE with a seperate style sheet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

Works for me in Firefox and notepad, €€€, see. That last one was Alt-Gr and 4 though. Not that I've ever needed to use Ctrl-Alt-4 though.

    Anyway, Firefox >> IE.

Aye, I use them alright. Nice site though, cheers.

Always used Alt Gr and 4 myself.... but if it's a major problem, you can always just write EUR instead.. and thats 3 key presses too ;-)

I'm very happy with IE7.. never liked Firefox because of its slow initial loading time, and a couple of interface / usability issues that just pissed me off in the end.... The Favorites Center (should be "Favourites Centre"; come on MS, localise!!) in IE7 is great, and the tabs work just dandy. And so far it's been very stable on my system; not a single problem. Thumbs up from me, really.

    Ctrl-Alt-4 works in Firefox
Ctrl-Alt-4 not working for me in IE7 Beta2
    AltGr-4 working in both

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

the ctrl+alt+4 thing is non-standard - use any other OS and you'll realise this ^_^
Alt Gr+4 should work in *anything*, so you might as well get used to it.

Regarding the IE7 beta - I'm still in the magical world of Windows 2000, so I can't even install it! Thank you Microsoft, for giving me yet another reason to continue using Opera...

I have still kept Firefox as the default browser, yet now when i click on hyperlinks in my emails, I get nothing. If I make IE the default browser the email links work fine. Anti Firefox maybe?

Who would have thought Microsoft would release something that breaks the functionality of other programs.... Oh, everyone, right... (Total mystery to me why anyone is rushing off to use this given Microsoft's well documented history of anti-compretitive practices etc).

Have you saved a html page onto your desktop or something, out of curiosity, to see if the icon remains as an IE icon even when Firefox thinks it shoudl be the default handler for html files etc?

It changes to whichever is the default.

Don't worry though as i have sorted the problem......I uninstalled the beta :D

The Favorites Center (should be "Favourites Centre"; come on MS, localise!!)

That'll be fixed for the release! Generally dont localise it to en_GB for a beta release.
