Aer Arann flys in as Ryanair disgards Cardiff
    April 25, 2006 19:25

Ryanair is to scrap its service from Dublin to Cardiff from the 1st of May, while Aer Arann has said it will start a double daily service to Cardiff on the same day.

Ryanair said it was not renewing its five year contract as the airport has insisted on increasing its passenger charges by over 350%.

The new Dublin to Cardiff service is Aer Arann's fifth new UK route for summer 2006 and will be available for sale tomorrow.

The airline recently announced new services from Cork to Cardiff and Newquay, Galway to Liverpool and Dublin to Inverness.

Ryanair's Deputy Chief Executive, Michael Cawley, said that Cardiff is pricing itself out of the low fares market and that Ryanair has a choice of competitive airports available to it.

Refunds will be offered to any passengers who have already booked flights to Cardiff and who don't wish to travel to Bristol.

Aer Arann currently operates over 600 flights per week across 34 routes in Ireland, the UK and France.

good news...I like Aer Arran and have flow with them several times.....(always one way when collecting a car.....) Bristol is a favourite of mine, nice small airport like Cork, easy to get in and out.....I guess Newquay will be even smaller......Cardiff sounds very useful to me .....

Good news? I wouldn't go that far. Capacity on the route has now gone way down (737-800's vs ATR's), and prices will go up.

well, if there are passengers to be had, no doubt some one else will come into the market.....

CWL is not a well positioned airport and a lot of people use BRS anyway. Load factor may not have been great so while capacity is down it may be nearer what the demand is.

Apparently FR had 10x services weekly and Arann will have 14x so capacity is 48-49% of the Ryanair. The twice daily will probably appeal to more travellers especially if one is morning and one late evening to suit business pax.

and the point was it was good news that aer arran have gone in given that ryanair had already pulled out......so the equation seems to be 100% to nil and back up to 48/49%......
