pushing with rags to punish limpers

    Is this the wrong/right move?

Fitz €50 double chance, ive 4200 left after posting sb of 150, bb is a rock. Theres an ep limper(has limp folded twice, raised with QQ), a limper on the button(who previously limped on the button when folded to him, he had A10, he also earlier raised 3bbs in ep with QQ). The table is solid enough but full of players who just play their hands for what they are(ie no stealing, no bluffin etc, just ABC poker).

I see 96 offsuit in the sb, theres 1050 chips out there, I go all-in for 4200 total. good/bad/standard based on reads, type players etc.? the two limpers have roughly 5k each. I hate limpers in mtts(especially for a decent portion of their stack) and believe they should be punished...am i right/wrong or do i just have a chip on my shoulder?

This situation crops up a lot of the time and am wondering if my play here is tremendous/disgusting or standard? All comments appreciated

This is a good idea against these players who would really like to see a flop but don't want to actually put any chips into the pot. Watch out for the calling station with the big stack who likes to limp AJo here and will grudgingly call a raise because it won't hurt him. And your stack size is more or less perfect for this, you can afford to get called probably about half the time and be OK.

If you are doing this because you hate limpers that is just bad poker. Do it because you like money. If you're asked about it you can say you hate limpers, that's OK.

Make sure you show the 96o and call the table a bunch of weak tight nincompoops.

I did show it...only after the limper called with KK!!how he calls after i represented aces i never know:mad:

Yeah basically dave im doing it for the chips out there,i felt there was 1050 easy chips up for grabs but obv i had accounted for a limp with the kings. Its a move i like to use a lot but i was just wondering if its a profitable mtt strategy?

Was it the first limper who had the KK? If the first guy is the type to limp a monster you have to be more careful but usually I would rule out anyone else having a big hand, and feel unlucky if they do.

To think about whether this is profitable with the stack you have:

    2 possibilities:
    1. everyone folds and you pick up 1050 chips.
    2. someone calls you and you play a 8500 pot. Normally you will only get called by a big hand so let's say you are 25% to win this pot, so you lose 2000 on average when you get called.

So if this move works 2 times out of 3 it is more profitable than folding. Because your hand is crap, calling isn't much better than folding so you don't need to think "OK pushing is profitable but maybe calling is even better" which you would with say QTs.

I expect if you pick your spots well this move works more than 2 times in 3 which is enough to be profitable. If you are really getting called more than 1 time in 3 then the average hand that calls you will be weaker, too. You can probably get away with it at least once in the tournament.

    Do NOT do this.

The play is good - dont show - let em think that you do it with big hands. You would like to get away with it for a while. The last thing you want is them looking you up with A4o.

I've noticed this is becoming a more common play in recent times, so tread carefully.

I got caught out with 8 10o a couple of months ago, with exactly the scenario Roundtower pointed out.
I thought I'd get away with it, the chips in the middle was just so tempting....and it was bubble time, 10 left, I was about 3rd in chips and looking good..."I'll get away with it:)" ...but no, I got called by AJ on the button, who was 2nd in chips:(

In fairness, it sounds like you played it well enough culchie. That is a crazy call on the bubble with AJ. That sounds like the type of call that gets made every night in a pub game.

Always always beware of UTG and UTG+1 limpers when playing MTT unless UTG is a fish
i find UTG or UTG+1 call is AA or KK 9 times out of 10

Indeed. If I limp there it is almost never AA/KK. Sometimes it may be though, but more likely to be 55-TT.

Why not just raise to around 1.5k? If your called or raised, your done with the hand.

I agree with Rnger, I do not like all in preflop steals. If you do it more then once you can pretty much garuntee that ep players will limp with strong hands hoping to entice a raise from you. I think it is a high risk play, and usually the rewards don't merit the risk, unless you are getting short and need to do something.

All part of the deception. If I know that you think that I think that you know then I can use that to my advantage.

    I think.
