    Hi all,

Looking for a pointer of where to buy an electric guitar for my fella for his birthday...Want to do this tommorrow ( Wed ).... Don't have much detail of what exactly I am looking for - it's gonna be a surprise for him and through vague conversations all I can get is "electric guitar". He is a beginner and I have no clue where to start..... Birthday is on Monday - I know leaving it late - but he is a regular poster on here so trying to avoid him seeing this......Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey skye,

What kind of music does he listen to? How much can you afford to spend on a guitar?

When is it his birthday...you will save a few bob buying online but will have to wait a week or two for it to arrive.

    Hi Seany,

No good I'm afraid.. his birthday is on Monday. Music he's into includes Indie, Rock, Grunge, Punk etc. As for what I'm willing to spend...well as little as possible for something decent!!

Yamaha generally make good low end stuff, and since they're based in Dublin, you might even be able to pick it up if needs be.

If you're based in Dublin, the obvious ones are Music Maker and Waltons, but don't forget to check out the smaller shops, too. Your choices are virtually infinite, but make sure of a couple of things before you buy: 1) does the guitar sound good - ask someone to play it for you if you don't play, yourself 2) is the neck straight - play every fret from about seven and see if you can hear any buzzing from the string. Anything you like the sound of, he'll probably like (not an absolute, but a reasonable rule of thumb, and besides, if it's leurrrve and you like it, he'll get used to it); if the neck is even slightly warped, he'll grow to hate it as he gets better at playing.

As little as possible will be between 100 and 200, I reckon. Much cheaper and it'll quack like a duck, much more and you'll be engaged.

    Good luck.

Make sure u buy him a little amplifier as well ! (or he wont be able to hear it !)and a cable , and a tuner...

Best bet i woudl say is go to 'Musician Inc' near georges arcade and buy the following

Guitar :''Fender Squier Telecaster '' or similar - Definitely get a guitar with a FIXED bridge..VERY IMPORTANT as ''tremelo bridges'' can be a nightmare to tune for beginners-trust me ! Will cost between €150-€200-
This is what it looks like :
    http://www.thomann.de/thoiw6_fender_squier_affinity_tele_mn_mr_prodinfo.html

Amplifier: Roland Microcube (its the biz) and has a tuner built in -€109.
    Cable - €10
So about €330 for the lot.

If you buy guitar and amp in the one shop you should expect these trhown in for free- cable , plectrums and a set of strings.

    Good luck !

Think it's a good enough deal for a beginner.

    Thanks again.
