i have a fender performer 1000 amp that i bought second hand recently. it sounds great and works fine but there is one slight problem

When i switch to the distortion channel it can take a couple of seconds for the volume to come through properly and it is very queit for a little bit before coming through. The amp is ten years old and i dont think it had much use. the distortion channel has a 12AX7 tube pre-amp and i am wondering if i need to replace the tube or something.
if so what tube should i get and is it a job i could handle myself or would i need a pro to do it? Thanks for any help.

Just pick up a new valve, that seems to be the issue.

I've heard good things about theese sites.
    http://www.eurotubes.com/index.htm
    http://www.dougstubes.com/

The guy from euro tubes is great,I was deciding wether to get some 6l6 or EL4 valves for my Laney so I e-mailed him and replied with a very informative e-mail about what differences I could expect.

There is also a good faq on Eurotubes website.

i dont even know how to access the valve. i took off the metal square at the back of the amp in the top corner and there was a thin copper sheet bulging ouy. Naturally, i didnt want to pull any thing out, so i dont know whats in there. Is this where i can access the valve?
