    Hey guys,
I had to get a Structural Eng. to work out spec. for a non standard RSJ (about 5m long) going into me new house ... Architect advised this ... I got a quote back from the Eng. for 1700 euro + vat ... This would include a detailed sketch and 2 site visits ... Can anyone say if that sounds about right ??

What do you mean non-standard ? and if it's 5m long surely that's just a straight rsj ? What type of load is it carrying and are there any peculiar shapes involved ?

sounds expensive, unless there is an awful lot of fabrication to be done on it or its going to be holding up something the size of the firth bridge?!

Get the size & ring any steel stockholders, they'll give you a price straight off for the beam itself & you can figure it out from there

    I jusrt ordered a 12.2m length of 254 * 254 * 89 kg/m
and it cost euro 1k - about 1250 for to be cut 6/3/3m with plates and holes drilled.

So if you are getting 5m of probably less speced steel it should be about the 400 mark -- if a steel holder has it .
Sometimes they can only order in 12m mimimum, but you pay for the 12m even though you only need 5m.

check around and see. 1700 seems a bit high.

like the last post i would agree that the price is steep alright.
Im only assuming you're in the Dublin area so I would expect the overall cost to be higher than say where I am in Donegal.

From the basic details given it would cost around €1000 here

I should have said that I got two 5 metre rsj's from my local steel man for 340 just two weeks.

Try BS Ironworks. They are in Bluebell ind est. A chap I know used them for the rsj for his attic and they were about 700. He too was getting quotes for 1800 from others
