IT and career path

    Hi,
Im working in a IT team doing support for a while now. Ive got A+, N+ and working on CCNA. I didn't go to Uni but I have the option to do it in the future.

Im not sure what direction I want to take in the long term. Short term I want to work my way up to Network engineer in the company im in now. Most of the systems in my company are M$ machines so Im going to have to work on my MCSE after the CCNA. I wouldn't do the CCNA only my current job requires it to progress due to mainly being M$ systems.

I hope to do UNIX (Solaris) & also Linux exams and some security based exams in the future.

This is where I wan your help. At the moment im focused on Network engineer but in the future I want to work in a fast paced enviroment with v. good money and the opportunity to travel. Maybe contract work?

Im not sure how to start perparing myself for this in the future like what skills I will need to acquire etc. My main interests are security, network configuration etc. and UNIX administration...
I definitley want to stay away from programming.
Also, id be interested to know what administering AS400's are all about. Cruise ships seem to look for these quite often with very good money.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks.

can i ask how much experience you have in IT and how good are you ? you're throwing certifications out here but you don't really mention any experience apart from some support for a while !

i've worked in IT (infrastructure architecture) for about 9 years now and even though i have had exposure to administering and working on all of the systems you mention above (even as\400) admin but the only thing i would try to sell myself as is a Systems Architect (MS/Novell) or Oracle/SQL DBA.
In my view and experience there are very few roles that will allow you the exposure to become experienced enough to actually live up to all the certifications you are looking for.

On the other hand if you're looking for lots of travel you're most likely to get this if you're working (permanent) for a company as a consultant that has a requirement for worldwide installations/solutions (like sms products etc).

    just my 2 cents.
