i had ubuntu linux installed on a partition and windows xp pro on another. i know i should have gone through the proper procedure but i just deleted the linux partition. now when i start up the computer it gets past the screen with the hardware info and then it says "error 17" and then it just hangs. i don't want to go through the hassle of a format and reinstall. any ideas?

Or for ultimate simplicity, get the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD)

100MB ISO, burn in Nero, throw it into the CD drive and reboot.
Select Filesystem Tools from the Main Menu
    Then pick XFDISK.

There is an option in there to create a new OS selector, and save it to the MBR. It's really easy, and everyone ought to have the UBCD for disaster recovery. It's all free.

Keep the disk in a safe place. Every time I need to use it, I can't find any of the previous copies, and end up burning off another copy. I must have 20 by now.

Get it. Best download I've come across to date.

thanks for the replies. i took the drive out and plugged it into my other pc as a slave to get some files off it and when i put it back the error was gone. apparently an external hdd enclosure can fix a master boot record. odd but i'm not complaining
