Got to get my essay printed up for tomorrow and the damn printer is broken or seems broken.
When I try to print something it says "pause" on top where the status is normally for the printer.
We have put in a new cartridge but i dont think that is affecting it...

Very tough to trouble shoot these issues....
    Switch off printer.
    Restart PC.
Switch on PC when you have started up the PC....
    Try again.

Thats the most basic I can start with.

Printers can ba a bitch to troubleshoot. I would recommend going to the printer manufactuers website and downloading the latest drivers for your model of printer and install them, see if that helps you.

Yeah my dad thinks he may have lost the cd for the printer...
and the house pc aint hooked up to the net! so-will i put the driver on to a memory stick and put on the pc from that?

Never mind the driver....I doubt it is that although it may be worth a try if all else fails.....more likely a hardware issue with the printer. Putting on USB will work though...
Have you tried what I advised yet?

Yeah if you don't have internet access at home you can go to a friends or netcafe and download them to your flash drive then bring it home and install them.

You mentioned that a new cartridge was installed. You may have to re calibrate it or allign it and make sure the protective plastic thing has been taken off it... The amount of people that get caught out with that is unbelivable... Good luck..

Actually It didtn need to be aligned. I removed the plastic from it also to ensure that it worked. I went on to the HP Sit and it ssaid i didn't need to download a driver. It said that the driver was already apart of Windows 2000. So i went back to "add printer"-next-local printer-LPT1(Printer Port)-Deskjet 710c...and voila! (well pressed ok-then voila!)

Did you try the restart options....as I have a feeling that this would also have resolved the issue in this case.

DID you try UNpausing it? Go to Start > Settings > Printer and Faxes > Select your printer from the list. Printer window will open > Printer > Uncheck 'PAUSE PRINTING'. That should be it.
