**Please note that I am aware that this is not a medical board. I will not be using any information gained here to make a decision on what vaccinations to get, I am merely trying to gauge costs.

This is in relation to this thread. I got a Tetanus shot 2 years ago. Am I likely to have been vaccinated against any more of these diseases in school or whatever? I know I got a Meningitis vaccination, but was that for this type?

    Meningococccal Meningitis
    Tetanus/Diptheria
    Hep B
    Hep A
    Japanese Encephalitis
    Rabies
    Typhoid
    TB

    Thanks

    This might help you out

    http://oasis.gov.ie/birth/after_your_baby_is_born/vaccination.html

You got the meningitis C vaccine. Hep B vaccine is only given to people working in the healthcare sector, maybe prison guards too, not sure.

    Thanks for that.

It looks like Tetanus and Dyptheria are definitely covered. If I received that TB vaccination at birth, will it have worn off by now, or is it possible I could have gotten boosters as part of the immunisation program, or does it last a lifetime?

I'm not fully clear on the Meningitis:
I have been vacinated against bacterial Meningitis C, which is in fact Meningococcal but I assume I cannot be vaccinated against the acute viral form?

Is there anywhere I can get these injections other than from the Tropical Medical Bureau? I triend college (UCD), but their travel clinics are all full up.

Also, I'll probably (hopefully) be getting several, if not all of these injections around mid May. My exams are on around this time. Will the vaccinations affect my levels of concentration, alertness etc??

    Thanks

Tetanus booster lasts 5-15 years usually, Dyphtheria is covered in the 4-in-1, now 5-in-1.

TB vaccinations are very dubious and do not offer full protection, it is possible to get a heaf test to determine if you are still immune.

Viral meningitis is generally quite mild although debilitating, its the bacterial form that is fatal.

The information on the travel thread about malaria is correct, but CHECK THE RESISTANCE ZONES. Certain areas are resistant to certain drugs and so you may not have much choice on what you take. Generally if you set foot outside of builtup zones, you need to take it. Don't mess with malaria, the aggressive form is lethal and some of the milder forms hide out in your liver for decades and every now and then you will get another blast of malaria.

Vaccines also apply to certain areas so check this too. Remember that vaccines do not offer guaranteed protection and neither do they protect you from a whole host of bugs that no vaccine has been developed for!

    NEVER drink unboiled water.

You need to sit down with a GP and sort through which ones you need and don't. Your local GP can order in the vaccines for you as well and you don't have to go to a travel medicine place.

    NB:

This is a discussion forum for all subjects medical, biological and paramedical - the only thing you cannot ask for or provide is information which would replace that of a qualified medical practitioner. I actively encourage people to ask medical questions! ;)

many vaccines can give a mild flu-like symptom as your immune system activates, but generally excellently tolerated and this is why they are distrivuted to everyone so widely.

You get given info sheets when you get the vaccine
