Ryanair claim to be offering free flights to 'Munster supporters' from Shannon, 24,000 to be exact--1,000 for every point by which Munster beat Leinster at the weekend.

    Here's the full release:
    News Release

    24.04.06
    RYANAIR CELEBRATES MUNSTER’S VICTORY
    24,000 FREE FLIGHTS* FROM SHANNON

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 low fares airline, today (Monday 24th April), celebrated Munster’s emphatic 24 point victory over Leinster by giving away 1000 free flights for every point by which Declan Kidney’s men defeated Michael Cheika’s side. 24,000 passengers will now receive free flights* from Shannon in celebration of Munster’s imminent Heineken Cup Final appearance.

Celebrating Munster’s resounding victory, Peter Sherrard, Ryanair’s Head of Communications said:

“We are delighted that Munster has reached its third Heineken Cup final, and are confident that this year Declan Kidney’s men can go all the way and take home their first Heineken Cup. We congratulate Munster for winning so comprehensively and for giving their fans so many free flights. 24,000 free seats from Shannon are now up for grabs on www.ryanair.com until midnight Thursday, so we urge fans to book quickly, as demand for free flights* will be huge”.

    *one-way excluding taxes and charges.

Booking Period: Mon 24 Apr - midnight Thurs 27 Apr 06
    Travel Period: 15 May 06 - 30 June 06
Applicable Days: Mon - Thurs (subject to availability)
    Advance Purchase: 21 Days

Sounds great. Except it is now the 24th of April (ie the first day of the sale) and it seems that either they have not put up the flights at all, or that they have experienced a complete sell out of ALL tickets to some destinations for the duration of this supposed offer.

I had a browse for tickets in the week June 12th -15th for all advertised Ryanair destinations from Shannon and here is what I found (time 17:50-Monday April 24th)

    Biarritz--No Flights that week
    Carcassonne-No Flights that week
    Faro--No Flights that week
    Venice-No Flights that week

Nantes--Tuesday and Thursday only €49.99 (All prices do not inc charges and taxes)

Barcelona Mon, Wed and Fri only at €49.99, 59.99 and 119.99 resp.
    Malaga--Wed Only €79.99
    Alicante-Tues and Thurs only 79.99
Rome-Tues and Thurs only 24.99 and 29.99 resp
Wroclaw--Tues and Thurs only 9.99 and 14.99 resp

But wait! There are some free flights, or as good as:
Paris/Beauvais --Free flights (well, 1c) on Tues, Wed and Thurs (€24.99 on Monday)
    Bristol--(1c for Monday-Thurs)
    East Midlands (ditto)

So of the 24,000 free flights the only ones available that week are to Paris, Bristol and East ****ing Midlands.

Either that or they've all been snapped up already.

Is this a deal at all, or just another Ryanair soundbite?

You would be very surprised at how quickly their seat sales sell out..

    I would indeed.

Back in the 1980s the Sunday Sport had a front page story about a World War II American Bomber that had been found on the moon.

A few weeks later they printed another front page story: 'World War Two bomber on moon mysteriously dissappears"

Wonder if the editor now works for Ryanair.

    Just a thought.
