possibly the wrong place for this, but does anyone know the name of the cards you can buy to use for ordering stuff online ?
hoping to get some stuff from amazon.com, but no credit card.

Yep 3v. I've used it cos I wasn't happy using my credit card on ebay.

    Very easy and good imho.

You can also send a postal order, or a giro cheque, I do that all the time, basically you write the order number etc on the back of the cheque.

but that would take a longer time for the order to process McGinty, I don't like waiting :p

Borrow a friends CC or use a money order, might work. I know it works for amazon.co.uk

There's an entire eBay forum on boards.ie, but I'm too lazy to go and find it for you. It's Sunday afternoon.

Much better off to give a friend money to open a paypal account. the Charges for 3V are absolutely disgusting. Only an idiot would use it.

what are 3V cards? hoe do they differ from Credit cards?

A 3V card is a prepaid Visa available from TSB it is aimed at 16-18 year olds, but the transaction charges are extortionate. It is a con aimed at ripping off teenagers.

There is no transaction charge with 3V vouchers. There is a €5 charge every time you buy an new voucher, which can be up to €350 at a time. €5 charge for €350 isn't that bad, 1.4%. If you don't clear you credit card ballance every month, the interest can be as much as 20%.

They're a good idea if you can't get a credit card (maybe your a student) or if you don't want one (maybe you don't trust yourself with one). The two billion euro of credit card debt sitting with people in this country makes me think that people would be better off without real credit cards.

3V is far from a con. At least you know exactly what it's going to cost you.

You would expect there to be some sort of widely accepted and easy to use virtual chequebook/debit card/electronic wallet to replace credit cards for online transactions at this stage. However banks are conservative institutions who don't like innovation, (especially Irish banks). Also I expect they like the money they make on card charges & interest so they really have no incentive to come up with anything better if more and more people are using credit cards online.
