I was out today for a walk in between Malahide and Portmarnock where people used to dive in a seen a nesting site for Rooks (I Think) in the wall with birds flying in and out pretty quickly, took a few shots and here's some. Taken with an EOS 350D with Sigma 70-300mm APO...

Quite hard to catch them, mostly left camera at 70mm until I had one in the viewfinder then followed (or tried to) and zoomed in as they flew, anyone have any other tips?
PS got battery grip today and it's excellent, balances camera really well with Sigma lens...

Second one would look great with a square crop, not sure the wall is doing it any favours!

I am not too fond of them myself but it was too good an opportunity to miss with them all in the same place... Thanks Ruu

    nice photos
the second shot - i notice that the wing is a tiny bit out of focus, is this due to the DOF not being long enough or is it something else? i've been reading about that particular thing earlier on - just wondering
    still it's good

second shot is horribly underexposed. you may be able to fix it up in the program of your choice. Looks out of focus. More DOF may have helped you there.

The first is exposed fine. Just nothing interesting to look at. Keep at it.

Second shot has the bird striking a nice pose... Its a pity the colours are a bit dull. Maybe crop it and make it into a silhouette?

(By the way the birds are Jackdaws, not Rooks).

Yep, definitely Jackdaws, not Rooks. Rooks are blacker all over and look more kinda untidy and dishevelled.

Mmmhm I think rooks have pointier, slightly longer beaks. Good piccies all the same :)
