    Due to start on Monday
April 24 start date for city bypass and second crossing
    By Marion O’Mara

CONSTRUCTION of Water-ford’s second river crossing and city bypass is set to get underway in just over two weeks time.

The April 24 start date has been confirmed by the National Roads Authority. Work will get underway simultaneously over the western link which will cross the Waterford / Limerick road in the area where the new cable stay bridge will be constructed and at Newrath.

The contract has been awarded to Celtic Roads Group, a consortium made up of two Irish companies, Ascon and NTR plc, UK company Royal BAM and Spanish company ACS Group.

The bypass will consist of a dual carriageway 23km in length from Kilmeaden to Slieverue, a cable stayed bridge spanning the River Suir at 475m in length and 4km of single lane carriage-way. In addition, there will be 11km of side roads and tieins along with 2km of rail realignment.

The additional links will tie into the N24 road to Limerick and the N9 road from Dublin to Kilkenny. The river crossing is close to the N24/N9 junction to the north west of the city, thus allowing traffic on the N25 Cork - Rosslare route to bypass the City.

The City Council’s Director of Transport and Infrastructure, Lar Power said that the entire project will take a maximum of three-and-a-half years to complete.

As work gets underway on April 24, a spokesman for the NRA said that disruption to traffic flow will be kept to an absolute minimum. He added that if at all possible no local traffic will be affected.

Transport Minister opens works on Waterford city by-pass

    14:12 Monday April 24th 2006

The Transport Minister has turned the sod on the Waterford city by-pass.

The 530 million euro project is due for completion in 2010.

The original route had to be changed after the discovery of a significant Viking settlement during excavations.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen says he hopes the new river crossing will reduce the dependency on Rice Bridge which currently caters for over 40,000 vehicles per day.

Speaking today the Minister said, "I think it's a defining moment. This project has been awaited for so long and clearly has clearly been a piece of infrastructure that's held us back in the recent past. For a city the size of Waterford to compete nationally and internationally you have to have the scale of infrastructure - motorways, big dual carriageways. The dual carriageway on the other side of the city has certainly created the feel of a city and this will certainly make the difference."
