Do a search for NEW YORK APARTMENT and you'll find a few relevant threads. Repeat with NEW YORK HOTELS and NEW YORK ACCOMODATION to bring up others - you'll find a mountain of advice, reviews and information

Just back last week from the New York Helmsley, lovely hotel, great location and a fantastic breakfast place next door!

I highly recommend it. Otherwise, go to tripadvisor.com and check out the reviews for whereever you choose.

We had booked an apartment for 3 (double bedroom and sofa bed) in December 04 through this crowd http://www.urbanliving-ny.com/

When we got there, the owner wasn't there to meet us (his non English speaking g/f was) and there was no sofa bed. They hadn't cleaned up either. When he arrived he said that it was for two people only and there was no way he'd allow us to stay there. After a bot of haggling he agreed to pay for that night's hotel for us (but I had to be a real hard ass about it) but we still had to traipse around Manhatten looking for a vacancy in the middle of December. We got very lucky with a room being cancelled minutes before in one hotel, and even then we only had it for 5 nights (moved to different hotel for other two nights)

On the positive side the Urban Living people were fairly good about it and refunded our money almost immediately and offered to find an other apartment for us and they'd foot the extra but we were just glad to have got the hotel so we refused that bit. They also pulled the ad for that other guy. When we got home we received a letter from a director apologising for everything.

The point I'm making is be careful who you deal with, it may be cheaper but if you're staying in a cramped apartment (New york ones are tiny - DO NOT believe TV shows) thats filthy, it might not be worth it.
