Region Code Enchancement - RCE

Just was shopping on PlayUSA for some R1 dvds and came across the above.
Please Note: Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE): has been added by Warner and Columbia to certain Region 1 DVD’s. RCE will prevent the DVD from playing on some “Multi-Region” DVD players. If you are in any doubt that your player may not be able to play RCE DVD’s, we recommend that you do not order this title, as we are unable to accept returned RCE DVD’s.
It makes it so multi-region players can't play the discs.

Infuriates me that these distributors are so determined to segment their target markets to the point where they are taking extra steps to enforce the region coding.

    Example:
    http://www.playusa.com/DVD/Region_1/3-/876930/Capote/Product.html

What difference does it really make - they are getting my money either way.

(Sorry if this is old news. I searched the forum and came up with nothing...)

It says that "RCE will prevent the DVD from playing on some “Multi-Region” DVD players". It just says some multi region players, but not all, so hopefully it will only prevent a small number of players.

    It's still an inconvenience though.

Never had a problem playing them with my chipped dvd player or my Aldi cheapo jobbie or my Philips Xvid player.

Sony players dont like them or unchipped panasonics, possibly more.

as far as i know my dvd player(chipped pioneer dv-350) is affected by this, its a bit of a b******* i agree, but luckily both Warner & Columbia tend to release all their discs on multiple regions so if there's a specific region1 dvd i want by them, i can nearly always find it on another region(generally 2 sometimes 3 or 4)

It only effects players which are set to Region 0 (all regions), and even then it will work on most of them. They work on all of my multi region players, even when set to 0.

RCE has been around for at least a couple of years and has been a failure for the most part.

I havent owned a dvd player yet that has refused these discs.
