Lawnmower pull cord

Yesterday my pull cord got stuck when I started up the mower and got tangled.
I managed to get the cover off and de-tangle it and spool the cord back up again, but now when I pull the cord to start the lawnmower, it doesn't retrieve the cord fully back into its position and leaves about a foot or so hanging out.

The lawnmower starts ok, but its just annoying. Can it be fixed?
