TCP/IP Corruption

    Hi guys

The internet on my girlfriends laptop stopped working, so last night i phoned up eircom tech support, and after trying a few things the guy reckoned it was a TCP/IP corruption, and that I should get on to my laptop manucfacturer (Sony) for them to sort it.

What i was wondering is what does this corruption mean, and will it be expensive to get it sorted?

    Thanks for your help.

    Roar

Is it Windows XP running on the machine? If it is try resetting the TCP/IP stack by doing this:

    - Click on Start
    - Run
    - Type 'CMD' without the inverted commas
    - A black box will appear
    - Type 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt' without the inverted commas
    - Hit enter

Try accessing the internet again, if the machine is prior to XP you can actually reinstall TCP/IP.

if you need to reinstall TCP/IP, just go to network connections in control panel, right click and select properties of the Network Card that it is using, highlight and remove TCP/IP on it, reboot if you need to, then repeat the process but instead of remove this time you are installing. also before you do any of that, have you try to ping the router yet? if you get a respond from the router, then it mightn't be your TCP/IP, never believe what the support guys tells you fully, some of them are qualify but some of them don't have a clue. I met them both since I used to work in that field, not for eircom though. let us know how you get on! :)

Yeah, before you start doing unnecessary surgery on your PC post a few details about your problem and see if it can be sorted for you here.

TCP/IP corruption sounds like a BS tech support answer to me.

As liamo said. Post all the information you have and what exactly you believe the problem to be, also include the OS etc.

Im fairly sure its a simple enough matter.

sorry been off for the last few days

It's windows XP, which i recently upgraded to SP2 for the advanced security features, as her laptop had crawled to a snails pace and was pop up city when broadband was on.

All of a sudden the internet just refused to work, and when you clicked on the broadband log in shortcut on the desktop a blank internet page came up (firefox) and no address in the address bar, the log in page is http://192.168.1.254.

When I clicked on network connections it said "limited or no connectivity".

So i phoned up the tech monkey in eircom, who got me to do what the insider outlined below, and also another command which i think was netsh /dump, which also didnt work.

so he got me to manually configure the ip settings and dns settings, which didnt work, after which he said he was fairly sure it was a tcp/ip corruption, although when i asked him what that meant he mumbled out something..

i tried going back to a system restor point to when the internet was working which didnt help..

so any help would be appreciated..

    thanks guys

If you were on with XP, no service packs, and you are getting loads of pop-ups, sounds like you have a BOT or Rootkit on your box.......

Re-install is safest thing, if you have backed up disk, and have SW.

BTW, what spec is the Laptop , Memory,Disk,CPU etc ....

Also where are you living? if you live near me Ill have a look at it for you next week sometime.

Failing that, I would first run some spyware remover, check for virus's, check for updates then reinstall firefox if all else fails.

The Insider: What would the following command do 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt' ? (Not a flame/Just Curious havent used it before)

that sounds like spyware, have seen it may of times, its spyware that hides on the computer, you need to clean the whole system of spyware and virii and then try thr internet!

    (Sorry OP)
irlrobins. Thanks for the link, some very interesting stuff. I had tried it on a 2000 machine in work with little effect but i can see how it would be very usefull in xp.

pinging 127.0.0.1 should tell straight off if TCP/IP has been corrupted

When I clicked on network connections it said "limited or no connectivity".

    Ta, this is the prob.

For a start having had this problem myself after an SP2 upgrade I would like to say he is talking **** of the highest calibre.

Let me paint a scenerio, your GF got BB before SP2 came out or around the same time? I had this issue with Esat myself and although they told me it was a problem with my Pc it was in fact a problem with the ADSL driver. Everything was fine when I started with SP2 for the first time however when I reset the PC.... I repetedly got the message "limited or no connectivity". See if there is a driver upgrade available or try a different modem/router first.

Any chance we can get the make and model no of the modem?

oh and try running "netsh winsock reset" in the command promt to make sure it wasn't a peice of spyware that messed up your winsock settings.

... or delete the winsock.dll file and fully shut down and restart your system. The file will be recreated on boot.

yeah i did this and it seemed to work, instead of getting a blank page when i started up firefox i got the usual error page, so i plugged in the modem and it seemed to be working, albeit fairly slowly.

so to test it out i logged into gmail, everything seemed to be working, i was able to download attachments and view pics and stuff, and then i opened a new tab and tried to open google, but it wouldnt let me, it was as if the modem was off, although it was all plugged in.

its really starting to annoy me as it seems like a fairly simple problem with a fairly easy solution but it just seems to be evading me..

it's a netopia four hub router, not too sure of the model but its not the wireless version
