    problem.

i can play movies fine when on the PC in full colour. but when i burn them to disc and play them in a dvd player, 3 out of 4 times it will only play in black and white. any ideas?

using cdburnerxp pro3 with memorex dvd-r discs.

p.s. as far as i know if i directly clone a dvd they will play fine ie taking everything off the original disc. it's just when i dvdshrink it or the like.

Are you're movies in NTSC format ? (Imports from another country)

    how do i check?

im aware of older TV's not being able to switch between PAL and NTSC formats. come to think of it, the TV in question was a very old one.

(the main tv which is hooked up to our main dvd player and surround sound wouldnt even recognise it).

i'll try hooking up the dvd player that plays it in black and white to the newer main TV.

plus, anyone know how to get a cranky dvd player to recgonise burned dvd's?

Yeah I'd say its the format. Had a tv that was'nt NTSC compatible so played movies in black/white....there should be a setting on the remote control or in the tv menu.

Well assuming you have the originals the DVDs box cover on the back will say whether its PAL or NTSC or knowing what country you got these from e.g Japan or US would be NTSC etc.

If the quality of the originals is very poor you might have been hoodwinked and these are knock offs that might explain why they are NTSC and cant be read by your DVD player. Such discs are often extremely poor quality and cause difficulty for many DVD players.

Some DVD players are simply better than others at reading discs & some don't even support reading writable DVDR formats though relatively new ones should. I would try another brand of media if your DVD player refuses the Memorex DVD-R.

Memorex often use CMC MAG which vary a lot in quality try some Verbatim if you can get them or Plextor DVD-R's which use TY media which is excellent quality.

thanks, im pretty sure it's the old TV causing the hassle.

my dvd's are backups of originals or so im led to believe :D so the quality is good, it's probably the discs that are causing hassle with my main dvd player.

so to put it simply, ive 2 tv's and 2 dvd players. The good TV is connected to the bad dvd player and the bad TV is connected to the good dvd player  ah well, at least ive probably found the problem. cheers.
