Watty would know better but chs in the 50s should be OK unless you have videos or other devices in this range.

    thanks for the reply tony
i've been hitting the 55-69 area, seems athlone is cluttered with
overlapping signals that seem to affect it and foggy days also
    screw up the signal.

strange that fog messes it up althopugh could be high pressure causing distant signals to appear, try 21 up to 30 and see if its any better

IIRC The main transmitters for Athlone are Cairnhill (RTE) and BrougherMountain (BBC)
Cairnhill uses 40/43/46/50 while Brougher uses 22/25/28/32

You basically need to avoid these channels and anything one, five or nine channels away from them
    e.g. TG4 are on 50 so 41 45 49 50 51 55 and 59 are all out

    You might also have weak signals from other RTE sites such as Maghera (66 68) Truskmore (60 63) Claremont (52 56 66 68) Kippure (59 62) and Three Rock (29 33 35 55)

    So this leaves you with
    36, 53, 54, 61, 64, 65, 67 or 69
try each of these and pick out the best (or least worst) and you should be fine until DTT starts (then the real fun begins)
