Irish Independent, Fri, Apr 21 06

A NEW hourly bus service from Dublin to Belfast has been launched which will serve both cities from 6am to 9pm seven days a week.

Ulster rugby star David Humphries (on left of picture) and Tyrone sharpshooter Stephen McDonnell officially launched the service at Dublin Airport yesterday, which will see coaches shuttling between the two capital cities at a higher frequency than ever before.

It is hoped that the hourly bus service will increase the numbers of people using Dublin Airport; while Drogheda, Dundalk, Newry, Banbridge, Dromore, Hillsborough and Sprucefield are among the areas served. The service is jointly operated by Bus Eireann and its Northern counterpart, Translink.

Dublin services originate and terminate in Bus Aras in Dublin City centre, with services from Belfast running from the Europa Bus Centre.

"Demand has risen due to increasing city break tourism and shopping," said a Bus Eireann spokeswoman yesterday. "Also, with Dublin Airport now serving 125 destinations, there are an increasing number of people from the North who want public transport to and from Dublin Airport."

To celebrate the launch, a promotional fare of €8 (£5.50) applies on selected services in both directions. Additional timetable information is available at www.buseireann.ie
