Do you talk like you type?

I was just wondering do you people talk the same as you type? You know what I mean? Like for instance I would type/post a sentence "well I think you will find that that is completely pedantic and unfounded" whereas (that word is another example) if I was to speak the same sentence it would be "where are you getting that from, your just being stupid now". You know what I mean? It's completely instinctual, as in I don't make a concious decision to type any different than I would otherwise speak, I just do it. I think it has something to do with years of having to write essays ect a certain way in school, or maybe its just because it takes longer to type something than it deos to say it, I dunno.

Oh yes, when I type I want to convey the impression that I'm alot smarterer!

Yeah... I reckon I type like I talk...

But thats not to say other people see it that way... There was that BBC news thingy recently where they talked about the difference between the way people assume their posts "sound" to the actual way that others see it.

Yeah I post like I talk unfortunately ....sh!te

Ya but i think i change the words to sound like de way i might say it. like i don't pronounce my th's on a lot of words and i drop de "g" on "ing" eg. "the" changes to "de" and "thinking" changes to "thinkin" but that's the way i'd say it, kinda just started doing it without realisin it.

Me speak good in real life.

Me not hide behind words on interweb.

Me dry and boring in real life as well.

There is no excuse for that.

And to answer the OP's question, yes, I believe I do talk quite like I type. If I were to describe my typing/talking in one word I think it would have to be 'thorough' :D

In fairness now that you mention it I suppose I do type differently to how I speak. Like when my mother (me ma) puts on a posh voice on the phone and in reality she's a bit of a rough skanger oul wan. (sorry ma)

It depends what thread im posting in. When posting in politics I have to think a bit when repling as part of a debate so my post tends to use language thats more thought out and comes across better than if I was posting in a fourm that was just a bit of craic or light hearted. ( in which case I tend to use more everyday language)

Only noticed that now that you made me think about though.

i think we all type differently then we talk because were concious that emotions cant be conveyed through words in the same way as they are in speak / body language.

what? its 5am? ive gotta be up for work in 2 hours !

Like I can type pretty fast, and talk much the same, cause that's just me. Being from So Cal most here are fast talkers, not in the negative sense, but rather those that just chat a lot. Heading for the hot tub soon and will probably solve all the world's problems in under an hour, while we work out what is sore and chat some more, so that's some pretty fast talking. Of course a beer or two while there, will leave us without a care. Cheers!

Start worrying about actually making sense before worrying about typing and talking in the same manner, I find your posting quite painful to read.

Yeah, I'm pretty much type like I talk. Less swearing maybe, since I know it's starred out here.

It's nice to have feelings. Politeness is a wonderful thing, too.

Typing a post on a bulletin board is a lot more formal than casual speech - your posts here are archived for years, if not decades, so it pays to watch what you say/type! By the same token, people generally speak differently when they know they're being recorded as opposed to how they speak casually.

Try typing with one hand while petting your pet fox with the other, that will give you an idea how I talk: multi-tasking.

Yeah, I say to be honest too much in real life too...

In AH or places where I'm giving a fast response I write pretty much like I talk. In Humanities or somewhere where I'm having a debate/discussion where I have to be more precise about my wording, my written word is far better than my public speaking abilities...

I type almost exactly the way I talk. I type what comes into my head on whatever the topic is, and that's how I'd talk about it too. It's slightly easier to propound what you want to say when you're typing, so my posts are a lot more concise than what it would be like to listen to me in person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭Blowfish

In general I do, but I my posted sentences are probably a bit more fluent and phrased better, because I have slightly longer to think about them.

[edit] unless I screw up and leave out words, like I did in this instance.

    hah!
i wouldn't have actually said that though. i would have laughed, but you can't hear my laughter through this post. then i would have pointed out that his name is "Hawking".
i tend to dumb myself down a bit when talking to most of my friends. they give me stick for using big words.

I think I'm the same, slipss.

But I actually try to make an effort not to write the way I speak. I often feel it just sounds so impolite to write in a too lax manner.

Not sure how to interpret this - does punctuation make its own set of sounds?

But yeah, I would be pretty exact about how I talk, and it's reflected in my rather anal approach to text messages, i.e., predictive text always in use, complete words and all punctuation in place. That's what long messages were created for.

Well, I know of a girl who was innocently browsing the internet one day when she stumbled upon a small forum. She browsed a bit and after a couple of minutes, deciphed that I post there, despite me NEVER having mentioned it to her! She said it was because I type the exact same way as I talk. So yes is the answer.

I pretty much talk like I type.. I also talk as I type a lot too :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭bounty_hunter

I doubt many people actually type exactly as they talk, because a hell of a lot of written things just don't sound right when read out loud. It works the other way too, whereby if you said something out loud it would make perfect sense, but in written form you have to elaborate to get your point across.

It's the same as the difference between, for example, novels and screenplays. If a screenplay was written in the format of a novel, it would just sound wrong when spoken out loud.
