    Hey,

My motherboard has an AGP slot in it, i am looking at a 256mb card on Komplett and it says agp8x as the interface type. My question is will this card work in my PC.

Also i am hearing it needs a 400 w power supply, the specs for my pc says my power supply has 175 w output. My question here is will it be ok to buy a 400w power supply, will it work, nothing overheating etc

    any info appreciated

    cheers

Sorry just to give spec of PC, Pentium 4 1.8 ghz, 756 mb ram.

Basically wanna use it for gaming half life 2 etc

Yes it will no need to worry.

Yes you will need a new PSU, 350W or greater will be fine not that you need anything greater.

Most mid-range graphics cards run Half Life 2 very well with high details these days you could easily get away with a cheap X1600 Pro 256MB for €136. A bit higher up the ladder is a 6600GT 256MB version for €189.

I wouldnt go with anything more powerful as your CPU would probably not be strong enough to get the most out of it.

    Cheers dude,

If you could answer one more question, that would be swell. Are power supplys all the same size etc

    Usually...

Most desktop PC's adhere to the ATX standard these means they use a PSU which has a standard set of dimensions and connectors etc.

If your not sure basically crack open your PC and take a look inside if you have a rectangular looking box where the power plugs into that looks a lot like the ones on Kompletts website then you know you have the right PSU.

The only real time you have to be concerned is where you have some odd looking case that isn't a standard desktop or tower case which might have a custom PSU inside it or a Dell system where Dell rigged the PSU to only work with their motherboards.

    I recently upgraded a Dell midi-tower (5150 I think) for a friend..

The power supply was a standard ATX, motherboard was standard ATX, which was pretty amazing, but Dell had to feck it up by changing the back plate of the power supply, so that when we fitted the new one (replaced 250W with a 550W) the power cable socket wouldn't fit.

Had to put the Dremel to good use and cut an opening at the back of the case... If you have a Dell be aware, even when they use standard components they screw it up.
