First thing that springs to mind is that it is a secure page (https:\\) so prehaps something is preventing you access secure pages.

    What ISP are you on?
Can you access other secure pages? i.e. your online banking?

    yep online banking is fine
    just this link
    https://www.austadmin.com.au/cgi-bin/lansaweb?procfun+uw4+uweolai+ump
times out in firefox, page cannot be displayed in IE

i would say its just an SSL prob. If your Mobile phone provider is vodafone, try logging into it. I once had an SSL prob ONLY with vodafone log in page. Everythin else worked fine.

To stop my prob i had to reinstall the whole system. reinstalling the browsers wouldnt work for me.

    Could you have been banned???:p

What version of Internet Explorer / Firefox are you using (help, about)? Some older versions can't access https sites, as their encryption isn't good enough.

Strange how it was working up until recently....also strange how it doesnt work in either ie or firefox but you can access other HTTPS sites.
I would go out on a limb and try whats here:
    http://www.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=164
Although its only for IE really and you are not having issues with other https sites.....

Delete all temporary files ,history, cookies etc from both IE and Firefox. Restart both browsers then try again.
Have you installed a firewal or antispyware software recently.....are you using any netnanny type software....

Not using any net nanny, although I have Norton Internet Security.
Tried turning everything off via Task manager still no lcuk
    IE 6
Firefox 1.5.02 - downloaded it yesterday to test
I did a clean last week using adaware and something else from download.com
Thanks for the advice so far, ill try it out

Might be a bit of a stretch here but it may be your hosts file causing the problem... Especially if both browsers are having issues getting to the page...

anything i can do with this?

The hosts file is a simple list of hostnames and their corresponding IP addresses, which your computer looks at every time you try and contact a previously unknown hostname. Sometimes though it can get screwed up.. When you open it, it should look like this:

    ***********************************************************************************************************
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    ***********************************************************************************************************

If there's anything in there under the "127.0.0.1 localhost" part you can put a # infront of it and it gets ignored... you can find the host file if it's windows xp in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc, for Windows 95 / 98 / ME: its just C:\Windows (I think)..

May not be anything to do with this but worth ruling out...

You could also clear your dns cache...

    Easy to do, go to

    http://www.petri.co.il/preventing_caching_of_failed_dns_lookups.htm

    for more info on it...

Cheers Jazmataz, the host looks fine - exactly the same as the one above - and flushing the dns buffer did nothing
Im beginning to think its a rogue app on the pc

mmm wonder if adjusting the MTU will work. It sometimes affects logging into secure sites.
