Raid: Is the floppy really necessary?

I want to set up a raid array. Can I use a usb stick for the drivers when installing XP? Or a bootable cd? I have the XP installer disc with SP2.

Is it the XP installer that requires it to be on floppy? Or is it motherboard dependent?

    I haven't used a floppy drive since the 90's!

I could get one, but it'd be a real hassle.

You can make yourself a new windows CD using your current one, by "slipstreaming" your raid drivers into the disk then burning to a CD-R. This is fully legal and endorsed by MS. nLite is the program you'd want to use for doing it, most user friendly option.

What motherboard is it that you're using ?

Xp defaults to Floppy during install so no way of using anything other than Floppy, stupid Xps fault. Damn annoying i keep just one IDE drive just for that purpose, install XP onto IDE copy to SATA then few months reinstall onto IDE and copy to Sata when working fine.

Another easier way is to Slipstream the drivers into the XP cd.

Or Google for other ways to slipstream drivers in.

Nice one. Thanks chaps. I'll slipstream. I did a slipstream of SP4 with my win2k cd before and it was pretty hassle free.

If you use nLite I think it comes with special instructions for NForce 4 based mobos. The forums have info about it, apparently the nforce 4 boards can be very bitchy about having their drivers slipstreamed, so theres a detailed fool proof step by step.

Hehe. Thanks demon. I'd wiped everything by the time I got your post. I actually used nlite after some reading and it worked a charm. Lovely piece of kit. Currently have the base install complete. Very very fast boot.
