It's not down to strength...but technique. Some of the better players here might be able to explain it better.

But 175 with a driver seems way short. I hit my driver 280-300.

Ruggie's correct. It is all down to technique. I play off 6, down from 12 last year. I attribute most of it to lessons I recieved in the off season, both last year and this.

Think of it this way, the minute you can get the club to strike the ball correctly, you can then start working on the speed of your swing. There are so many factors to be considered to be honest and a I hit it such and such distance, is actually a bad marker to start from.

For example. I use Prov1 balls. I have a mid-flex 9 degree driver. If, in the same conditions, I used a 9 degree driver, and a high compression ball I could get an extra 25-30 yards on a "typical" drive, however I would loose an element of control, feel etc..

Don't concentrate on distance, concentrate on hitting the ball correctly and if you really want to improve, go to a decent pro and learn how to hold and swing the club correctly. It's great when you can play better.

Are you hitting around 175 with the range balls or playing balls?
Range balls are garbage and if you were playing an actual round you may notice you hit it a lot further.
I hit the range balls in blanchardstown and hit them anywhere between 170 to 190, but playing a round with Callayway Warbirds I hit around 250 - 260.

I can't agree with you there Homerjk.. I don't find any difference in distance, and it's not that hard to hit the end of the range in spawell!

As for giving up golf and just going to the range, your decision, but personally i don't see the point!

Distance is all about getting your bodyweight behind the ball, which is technique pure and simple..

don't see as big a difference as homerjk but you will see a big enough one, the balls used are manufactured to only go 80% or so the distance of an average ball (at best). You can also buy them made to go even less distance still:

i hit around 300-310 mark with a 7 degree stiff shaft titleist 975J. i hit the ball really high and still do even with this!! but i agree with RuggieBear it is all about the technique... a few lessons with the driver and it'll add 20-30 yards to your drive

yeah, always found distances at the range a little unencouraging... but you should concentrate on aiming at the markers, whatever the distance. As someone said, "Anyone can hit the ball, but golf is all about accuracy."

I'd say on a good day I hit my drives about 220-230. That's long enough on most of the courses I play, if it's in the fairway! Still have a chance of hitting the green with a mid to long iron.
