North-South Co-operation as Rugby and GAA Stars Launch new hourly Dublin Belfast Bus Service

April 20th 2006 – Bus Éireann and Translink, the Northern Irish public transport provider, today launched a new hourly bus service between Dublin and Belfast. The new service will see coaches shuttling between the two cities at a higher frequency than ever before.

Ulster Rugby star, David Humphries and All Ireland medal winner and GAA Allstar, Armagh’s Stephen McDonnell officially launched the service at Dublin Airport, which is served en route.

The new service offers customers an unrivalled level of service between the two cities, with hourly departures in both directions from 06.00hrs to 21.00hrs seven days a week.

All departures now serve Dublin Airport, which offers vastly improved access to and from the Airport for those based in the North wishing to fly in and out of Dublin.

Drogheda, Dundalk, Newry, Banbridge, Dromore, Hillsborough and Sprucefield are also served en route by certain departures.

Fares start at €8 one way.

The service is jointly operated by Bus Éireann and Translink.

Dublin services originate and terminate in Busáras in Dublin City centre. Belfast services originate and terminate in the Europa Bus Centre in the heart of Belfast.

A spokesperson for Bus Éireann said: “The Dublin Belfast hourly service was introduced as a result of the growing traffic between the two cities in recent times. Demand has risen due to increasing city break tourism and shopping. Also, with Dublin Airport now serving 125 destinations, there are an increasing number of people from the North who want public transport to and from Dublin Airport, which is served en route. This service, which operates hourly, seven days a week, is catering for that growing demand by offering customers a vastly increased frequency on this busy corridor.”

To celebrate the launch of the service, a promotional fare of just €8 (£5.50) applies on selected services in both directions. The standard single fare is priced at €12 (£8.30) with return fares priced at €17 (£11.70)

Customers can obtain additional timetable information online at www.buseireann.ie and www.translink.co.uk.
