Problem with Archos Gmini xs202s

Just received it today from amazon.co.uk.

Following the quickstart guide in the box, I plugged in the charger, plugged the USB into my laptop and used it as a Hard Disk drive to get the manual (which is stored on the player itself). Ejected from the laptop, switched off, and left to fully charge.

When it was fully juiced up, I reconnected it to PC, still running off DC power, and manually drag'n'dropped all my music folders onto the player. Again, I safely ejected it from the PC, and went to update the ARC library on the player. Here's the problem: it freezes when it gets to 342 files, and will not shut down.

Unplugging the power turns it off, but if I try and update the ARC library while running on battery, it simply switches off. I've emailed the tech support, but as I just received it today I'm understandably anxious to see if anyone can help me before 2 business days, ie Monday.

The Firmware on it is up-to-date, and I'm running XP SP2.

If anyone can help, I'd much appreciate it.

Edit: Problem solved, crisis averted. :D

Am thinking of buying one of these, what was wrong with it in the end?

Something ridiculous: a corrupted mp3 file or something that I was porting across. I have no idea why it caused such dramatic crashes instead of the file just not working, but them's the breaks.

I know I've only had it a day, but it seems to be pretty handy so far. And €190 for a 20gb player isn't bad at all.

Little things that I like about it:

-> Really simple navigation system. Two buttons and a joystick.

-> Direct Drive compatability. Switch it to Hard Disk mode in the system folder, and just use it like a memory stick. No iTunes/Connect Player nonsense to deal with.

-> The charger it comes with is North American by standard, but there's gismos to change it to UK/European plugs. I'm going to America for the summer, so the US charger is handy for me.

    Cons:

-> crazy error this post is about :D

-> Depending on how you organise your mp3s, scrolling through can take a while.

-> screen is apparently very soft, so I bought a case to go with it. I'm going to be careful with it though, I've a bad track record with LCD screens...

Can't really think of anything else at the moment. All the online reviews I could find of it were very positive anyway.

I'm thinking of getting one of these too. Im interested to know is their a compatable remote controller thingy for it, you know that attaches to the headphones wire? I dont see one at amazon.co.uk...

Thanks OP for your frank opinions!

I contacted Archos by email and they inform me that there is no headphone with volume control and skip for the GMini XS 202.

    Great bargain indeed.

Got mine from Amazon the other day. The freakin' case is completely the wrong size though, and doesnt allow operation of the device or viewing of its screen when its in the case. Im talking about this one here, specifically:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00027D8PA/ref=pd_huc_gp_hr_4/203-5246434-1583131?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Are they selling cases in Dixons?

I got this case for mine, and it is excellent, protects the screen well and lets you access all controls and ports.
