    Hello,

My HTPC budget is under severe pressure and the new XBOX 360 looks a bit away for the moment...
Is it possible to pick up an orginal Xbox second hand and use this as a media extender.
I plan to have the HTPC upstairs and the xbox in the living room connected via Cat5

    Regards

    Liam

can be done alright, but AFAIK it is only available in NTSC for the XBOX, which means chipping it.

Also, as the extender for the XBox is emulated in software, its pretty sluggish.

TBH, you might be better off buying a full-blown extender from the US. Netgear make one as do a couple of other companies. Again, its in NTSC so your TV will need to support it'

If money is tight you could forgo the MCE app for the Xbox which wasn't that great to begin with and if you really want to save those pennies do a soft mod on the Xbox and setup XBMC [Xbox Media Center] on it which will do most of the MCE duties quite well bar watching/recording TV.

You can play back many video, audio and picture formats with it much more than the official MCE extenders.
