Yep was thinking of them, but just wondering if there was someone more local?
Also, any idea of a price?

Rang Emilio, and he quoted €190 for '6 month' service, which includes as standard:

    New Spark Plugs
    New Points
    Oil Change
    Replacement Gaskets
    Replacement Air Filter
    Timing and Tuning of Engine
    Break adjustment
    General check-over of vehicle

    What do you guys think?

6 months or 3000 miles for a beetle, whichever comes first.

You won't find anywhere that know beetles better than the lads at Emilios,
I think that was what I paid for my last service there, and that was 4 years ago ;)

i should think that would be well within most peoples capability to do them selves......save a packet too.....

Most older cars are simple enough to work on your self but if you have just got the car and these guys know them inside out, might be no harm to let them give it the once over, just ask for the service and to give you a list of any jobs that need doing, plus the fact I've seen a guy having to use a gas torch to free brake adjusters on a Beetle:D

Replaced the fan belt, installed new aerial, thats about it.
To be honest theres a few things wrong with it that I cant fix, like the windscreen washer and leaking oil and a few other bits.
Also have a problem with car starting which I cant figure out:

Bought a new battery a few months back. Car hadnt been used in a few months. Tried to start it a few weeksd ago, and it was dead. Jumped it and left it run for an hour. This seemed to have done the trick.
Next weekend it started first go.
But the weekend after, it wouldnt start again.
Battery has a light on it to say whether its charged/needs charge/needs replacement, and it says its charged. Red lights come on dash, etc.

    Any ideas?

What happens when you turn the key?
Nothing at all or just won't turn fast enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 601 ✭✭✭garlad

First tinme there was a little click, like something had tried to turn, next time nothing.
Also to note that Emilio himself had put in a starter button near the battery to start engine.
Not sure why, but all I know is sometimes the key doesnt start the engine, but the button always did !

Could be a bad connection along the ignition circuit or the switch itself, the button fitted will bypass that and connect your starter directly to the battery-
this rules out the battery. A screwdriver across the terminals on the starter solenoid will do the same thing.
Hotwiring (sorry can't remember which two wires) will rule out the switch as the problem, that leaves the wiring......

    Justin.
