get over the 3 day hump and you'll be ok.

    chew gum

I'm trying to quit atm too, not going cold turkey though as I've found I can't do that from previous experiences.
Cut down to 1 or 2 a day.

Drink loads of water/coffee and chew chewing gum, I've found that helps.

stick with it, its more than worth it (as you know). I gave up 7 months, two weeks, 3 days and 2 hours ago (not that I'm counting) and I really feel the benefits now. Just yesterday, took a really deep breath, and only after did i realize how deep it went. Not even one of those little wobbly noises at the end. Its feckin brilliant! Be strong, and sure if you eat the head off someone, tell them you're off the smokes, I'm sure they'll understand!

Jaggeh then Ill just tell everyone that you like to wear dresses at home when you think nobody is watching. oooops.

anyway I was thinking of going and buying some nicotine patches, I was gonna try cold turkey but there is no point!

Somebody just walked by me smaelling of nicotiney niceness. mmmmmmm.

I'm off them a month and I feel great. Really.
The odd pang here and there but they only last a few seconds. I think the key is too acknolwedge the craving is there but then do something to distract yourself. Then it goes away.

I wouldn't trust the patches myself tbh.

    Stay strong Katy :)

i used the patches before.. just beware, they mess with ur head... i used to get da freakiest of dreams when i used them, waking up in cold sweats and was an anti-christ all day... so ended up back smoking coz i was going nuts... the chewing gums wud prob be better than patches!!

Exactly, each craving only lasts a maximum of about 20 seconds, and the interval between cravings goes up rapidly the longer you are off them. The other side of things is the habitual element, and that involves making changes in your daily routine about the time that you would normally light up, say after dinner, or first thing in the morning.

Having said the above, I'm off for a smoke, as I'm in between giving up periods.

Thanks for the words of support, gum it is, I'll pick some up on the way home.

One question, I gave up before, and if someone was smoking, and I inhaled the smoke, I felt better. Is that cheating?
The last time my downfall came when I was drunk. Damn alcohol.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭aido_2006

haha i dont know if that is cheating coz its not in ur hand and u can blame the other person for blowing smoke in ur face just as u where taking a deep breath!!! damn alchohol has been my downfall in past , not this time tho!!!

Agreed. Tell yourself it will pass in a couple of minutes and do something else until it passes.

Loads of water and chewing gum (regular gum mostly and sometimes nicotine gum for the tough times - like having a drink) got me through.

The first few days are the toughest, then it's not so bad.

I gave up 2 months ago , I took a medication called zyban, which made it really easy to stop, this stops the "I want a fag " receptors in your brain.

Keep it up its amazing when you stop, my life has improved so much and I dont stink like an ashtray

is it like a natural thing made of herbs cause Im all for that or actual proper prescibed medication?

I gave them up six years ago. I gave up drinking for 2 months after as I knew I'd cave. I also gave up smoking j's (if you do that) for about a year.

Best thing I ever did, I feel so much healthier now.

Hey Katykaboom, fair play to you for trying to give them up, i know how hard it is, i'm off the cigarettes 14 weeks now. i understand where you are coming from, when i gave them up, at first it was all i could think of, all i could smell from people, could have killed them for one. However i am not just saying this, it does get easier, although i still crave for them, especially when i am out drinking, as one was always associated with the other in my mind.... get patches or gum if you need it, i went cold turkey myself, it was hard but glad i done it, but definitely do whatever makes it easier for you... Best of luck :)

I dont have the will power to give up smoking and drinking and watch what im eating all at once id go mad. MAAAAAAAAD.

I tend to go straight for the food press when Im quitting the ciggies.

Gave up a week ago, it's easy ! But having said that towards the end I was only smoking 1-2 smokes a day from 20 about 6 months ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭Tobias Greeshman

Was off them myself from Christmas till mid-march and ended back on them when I was out with the lads. They were all smoking and drinking, fecking a right killer to not get tempted when drunk. I blame the stupid smoking ban, I'd be more than happy to sit there being a passive smoking, but this stupid government won't let me.

Anyway Katie, good luck with giving them up.

its a proper prescibed medication , I got it from my doctor, Im not sure if its available in Ireland I got in in the states

    see link http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/zyban/zyban.htm

But my god does it work, cravings are totally gone, you take it for 2 weeks while still smoking and then completely stop,
