    Strange one here..

A friend of mine uses their eircom account regularly and logs onto the website to access it. They were connected this morning when the webpage refreshed itself and the amount of email in their inbox went from 30 to 2!!

I checked their account thinking they did something and the email is no where to be found, most if not all of their contacts are gone yet their sent items are all there.

Could Eircom have lost their email?

Due to a policy Eircom have put in place, you're prevented from connecting to eircom.net email accounts via Outlook Express when you dont subscribe to Eircoms broadband. So no backup of the email can be made on the local PC.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Any eircom.net employees on here???

Tried contacting support but have been sitting in a queue for ages and then they dropped my call!!!!

Not true, you can access eircom.net pop server from any BB provider, but if you have viewed the mail in webmail then you won't be able to download it via pop as the fools at eircom move/mark the mail so its no longer available. Don't bother pointing this out as I have already and was told thats how it is so use somthing else if you want to back up via pop...

BTW you can access webmail from any BB provider too

I get my Eircom email @eircom.net into my outlook express despite having switched from Eircom Dial-up to BT Dial-up if it is of any info to you.

Hmm someone in Eircom support so feeding me a line so, as I was getting an error a few weeks back on this same persons PC when trying to connect to the eircom.net account.

Did the usual troubleshooting and went through all the various fixes suggested on various sites, including Eircoms one, no joy, so contacted Eircom.net support, the person at the other end informed me that because my mate wasnt using an Eircom broadband account, he wouldnt be able to connect using Outlook express due to a new policy Eircom put in place!!

Thats what I get for trusting people.. ahh well, ok, time to get back onto Eircom.net support and see what I can find out about this missing email. At 1550 no rates they would wanna get their ass in gear and answer the bloody phone quick.. But sure I aint paying.. its my mate who wouldnt take my advice and use the gmail account I setup for him :D

What the support guy prob said was that you would no longer be able to connect to the Eircom SMTP server while using a different ISP connection. This is very common in order to prevent spam relaying.

Basically ISP's will only allow access to the smtp server (which is used to send out mail) to people who are connecting to it from one of their own ip addresses. So if you are on a BT connection you can connect to BT SMTP but not the eircom SMTP.

You can still receive your eircom mail from the POP3 server regardless of what connection you use. You just need to change the smtp server from the eircom one to the one your ISP provides.

You probably just picked up what the support guy said wrong. Or he explained in a manner that was confusing.

Clear History and Cache and log in again.

Failing that, change password and move on. (Give your friend a kick in the sac for downloading the mail - it's his fault. It's the lusers fault until proven otherwise.)

Thats the thing, he didnt download the email, he just connected to the website email portal and viewed them there. There were never on his PC.
