IT work in Australia for holiday visa

    Hi guys,
I'm planning on heading off to Australia for a year or so on the holiday woking visa. Doing the typical thing everyone seems to be doing these days. Seeing as you can only work 3 months in the one job with this visa and the fact I want to get around a bit to see different places this seems ideal i.e. different contracts in different places for a couple of months. Anyway I'm just wondering does anyone know

    1) Is there much contract work over there for IT jobs? I'm a programmer, mainly VB and SQL, but know JAVA and C++ etc as well, just haven't been working much with it. I'll have 2 years experience in a large reputable company by the time I'm planning on going (soon).

    2) How does the pay fare against work here, taking into account the cost of living over there etc?

    3) Any other info you think might be useful to me??

    Thanks in advance

Most of the IT in Oz is contract based. They don't have the same amount of software companies as such that we do. Its quite well paid too.

    Hey,

I am just back, i got a development job there quite easy with the same company, if you list with an agency(i used Elan) they usually have sister companies and will just transfer you over after the 3 months so as not to be traced, its still breaking the law but a lot of people are doing this.

Money is good, but it depends on experience, personally i was in Java so demand was high not sure about VB etc. Experience counts as in anywhere but if you think your up to scratch with other languages then you can always milk it if your having trouble landing a job.

I thought www.seekit.com.au was the best site myself.

Have a good un, make sure you hit Cairns and Darwin for a month or so at least, had a ball up north

    Hi,
I am currently in Perth doing development work. Got a job with the government doing c#.net and vb.net, my 3 month contract is nearly up but i have 2 other .net contracting jobs in the pipeline.
There are loads of development jobs here in perth.
I was in sydney for 3 months before xmas and found a development no problem there. The agencies are quite good but you have to keep at them. I got a call recently from sydney www.hubnetglobal.com.au regarding jobs that were available. you should contact them. It was a guy called Mel Kelly. He's irish and sound really nice. Good luck.

Did you have much experenice when you went out there. Hopefully when I go I will have just shy of 2 years sql server and .net. Would this be ok do you think?

Yeah, I also will have 2 years experience, mainly with VB6 and SQL Server, but I also know C++,Java and .net. Just haven't had a chance to use it where I work at the moment. Is it a case of there being more contract work over there compared to here? I always thought that you'd need a fair bit of experience or be quite specialised to do/get contract work in Ireland anyway. Is it easier over there? How do the wages comepare to here also, taking into account the cost of living etc.
I was kind of hoping to work for 6 - 8 months or so and save up enough cash as well to go and enjoy the remaining months travelling around a bit etc. To you think thats doable?

    Hi,
id say 2 years .net experience would get you a good position. they are always looking for .net developers once you have some experience you will be fine. Contract wages vary. i found that the wages offered in Sydney were better than those in Perth but saying that..living in Perth is alot cheaper than in sydney, probably because its quieter and in general heading out is cheaper. Accommodation is much cheaper here also. im working for about 6 months here before i head off too. and i should definately have enough money to travel back to melbourne and then nz on the return route home.. and im not scrimping.. you will be fine,id love to be starting again, time just goes so quickly here....
