Lord Sam at 16/1 looks good value for a place and Standing Obligation to win.

In Newmarket Tarfalgar Bay & Sir Xaar look tasty prices to me.

I would agree Pirate Flagship is prob the Nap.

I would be very surprised if Sir Xaar stayed a mile, he looked a sprinter all over last season.

The Thrifty Bear looks overpriced in the 2.45 at Redcar. If he handles the ground he should have a big part to play here. Fairly hacked up in this grade back in august and looked a horse with the sope to improve further. They then dropped him into the deep end in a listed race and of course the poor thing almost drowned.

Back at a level where he has shown his superiority before at a price of 22-1 I think that if the rain stays away this one will represent good value.

Can people expand more on their "tips" or give a basis for their selections..... i.e sources, recent form, etc. (thats my opinion!!) its turning into "the online betting guide" here!!

Are you feeling brave picking in one of the biggest fields of the day, where the draw advantage is difficult to call and where most of the field are unproven on the ground and for quite a few it's their first run of the season so fitness can't be taken for granted?

For what it's worth I like the look of top weight Antica at around 10/1, one of the few proven on the ground and was very much on the upgrade at the end of last season.

I feel a sense of Deja Vu coming on.

I agree with you though, I sometimes reckon we should have a sub forum for selections and keep the main forum for discussion.

At this time of the year there's a lot we have to take on trust. This race isn't much different. In this case I've selected a solid, each way alternative at a decent price.

True masterk, maybe the thread should be renamed "thursday selections" and have a seperate thread for users who are willing expand on there selections such as vindon...im guilty of this in the past myself but since there was much criticism over certain members of this forum posting up random "tips" ive learned to expand on my selections..

Not a bad idea. I've ranted and raved about this place becoming like OLBG - it's why I asked iloveireland to expand on his tips. We should probably have a "<day> selections" as you say, and a "<day> pin-on-card" thread.

For some reason I don't see vindon posting outside of his own thread :p

The best idea is a subforum for selections and the rest ofr discussion. Although in saying that there's probably only a handful of people who would take part in a non-betting discussion about horse racing.

(For reference, see all the non betting threads that I have started in the last month, just about all of them went unreplied.)

I'd like to see selections with reasoning and discussion attached to them stay in the main forum but those who just want to list horse names exist in a sub forum (similar to the way other forums operate).

i have to have shining strand as my nap for the day. his last four runs - he won once, ran out when clear 20L at 5/2F, finished 2nd over 23furlongs at 4/1F with a full 11-12 on him, and finished 4th last time out at 2/1F over 23furlongs again carrying full 11-12 when he tired. today he runs carrying just 10-13 over a shorter 21furlongs. he has won before over this distance round about this time last year when he was carrying 11st. i think with the short drop in trip and drop of the weights he surely should win this.!!

    shining strand 3/1 - 2.55 cheltenham
    good luck!!!!

I must start backing in these dodgy looking races, Antica wins at 11/1.

There ya go...ran on the far side with Thrifty bear and quickend up well. Well done.

thrifty bear went off around 40-1 and wasn't beaten too far in the end. Will strip fitter next time out.

Nice one with Standing Obligation, had a few bob on him myself. Was worried about the weight and previous run but thought his time would come again.

Check out "Shank on the fourteeth" tomorrow at Thirsk. Karl Burke trains and the handy P Cosgrave rides. The horse has been off the track for the guts of 3 yrs but is a CD winner. Lee Westwood owns, defo my each way bet of the day, should be at least 25's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭Corben Dallas

    Nice race from Killybegs

+Pirate Flagship was backed in to 2/5, so a lot of money went on.
    >>> Lucky Lydnsey jockey W J Lee should get a 2month ban for his ride in the 5.50. Did anyone see?

Hes either the most stupid jock ever to get in the saddle or more likely it was a 'bent' race.(imo) He got him up to teh head of the field without a big effort, sat with one or two at the head of the field, stayed there no problem, was shaping up nicely and got to teh 2/3furlong marker and the other jockeys went for home and......nothing! no effort from teh jockey, whip dont think ever produced, horse never encouraged, zero input thru the reins.

That ride was very dodgy and WJLee goes into the note book as very suspect and a non tryer. He should get a 2 month ban for that ride.

The contrast from the last race where he won w/o breakin a sweat to this were the horse (with possibly some speed) was just not riden is startling.

check the highlights and see for yourself.

Jockey dropped his whip. I had to watch it a couple of times before i recognised this. I too had money on it. Will watch out for it, would has won easily if this hadn't happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭Corben Dallas

    really!?

that would explain it, it really did look very very dodgy(as most ppl can see in the replay- no effort made). But if he dropped his whip then at least it explains such a poor effort(none made) from jockey.

where is it reported that he lost his whip?
    Thx :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭RedPeppers

I didn't look tbh but he defo did. I looked very hard and there didn't seem to be a whip, a few more ppl i was wathcing it with thought the same. In all fairness if he didn't drop the whip and was trying to throw the race im certain there would have been an enquiry as it was so obvious that he never drew a whip on the horse. In any case i am ginving him the benefit of the doubt. we might hear more about this..
