MMA question

    Hey

Kav posted on another thread about a "Pride Style" fight at ROT. I think weight differences can be a great addition to MMA, but what about other elements. FOr example, what about kicking a downed opponen, or elbows, or head butts for that matter.

What additions or subtractions would you like to see from/to MMA in Ireland.

For me I would like to see longer rounds, 10 minute first round, that kind of thing.
I'd like to see more offense from butt-skoot.
And the addition of elbows standing up.

What about you guys? Also in your post say why e.g. "No way should kicking / stomping of a downed opponent be allowed because....."

    Cool thanks

    Peace

I like the 3 x 5 minute round system.. I think 10 minute rounds are too tiring and can lead to some serious stalemating. Kicking/Stomping a downed opponent is pretty dangerous if you ask me. After seeing Yuki Kondo getting stomped down by Wanderlei, I had some serious concerns for his safety and health. I could see someone easily dieing from it one day.

Also, kicking/stomping a downed opponent looks very brutal and doesn't help the legal status of MMA in countries.

I think people should only be stood up on the ground if they are stalemating.. I've often seen in many MMA orgs, people being stood up halfway passing guard or whatever just to please the 12 or 13 drunk no-nothings in the front row who are booing.

I like the idea of elbows standing up, I think they are an important factor when striking, but they do lead to alot of cuts, and I hate seeing a fight finished with a cut. It no logner because who is the best fighter, it's who can cut the other fighter first. (Example Chris Leban v Kenny Florian). If I had to, I'd eliminate them, but only because of the cuts.

The butt scoot issue is tied up with kicking a downed opponent. If it's banned, then the guy standing can't do anything offensive from a striking point of view and would have to jumped into the other guys guard or pass to make it productive. There is no reason to be in the butt scoot IMO. If you are there, it's because you don't want to stand up. If you don't want to stand up, then you don't want to fight. Stand up, and take the guy down I say if you want it on the ground.

    Just my thoughts.

I'd like to see elbows standing.

I think the butt-scoot should be viewed as not engaging.

Soccer kicks, yes, stomps, no. For much the same reasons as dlofnep mentioned but I think striking at mixed levels can also lead to stalemating. There's nothing worse than watching a guy kick another guy in the legs for 2 minutes while the other guy can't stand up. Not saying I have the answers here but it's something that irks me in Pride.

To grow the sport I think Ring of Truth has perfect rules.

Stomps and knees to a downed opponent are great, but would kill off MMA here. Japan has the culture to support it, so yay Japan.

Personally I think we're better off without elbows (again from a growth point of view). Most Muay Thai fights in Ireland don't have them, so with the generally lower level of striking skill in MMA, I think it'd lead to lots of people getting busted open within two minutes.

What if extra protective gear was introduced to accommodate elbows and such?

Lets take Daido Juku (something I only came across recently) for example. Fighters wear funny looking helmets to protect against head strikes, punches and headbutts inparticular. Protection is needed against punches as fighters only wear small padded gloves, this is so that it comes as close to bare knuckle as safely possible (Daido Juku stand up is Kyokushin)

    Heres some clips:

Clive is right, the sport in Ireland is not yet well enough established to risk head kicks and stomps IMO.

On a side not, Joe Rogan said on the UG that UFC want to bring back knees to the head on the ground and are working on it with the Athletic Commissions

the ten minute round was used at the Europa shows in Belfast a couple of times under shooto rules but I dont think it caught on that well.2x5mins or 3x5 mins for title fights are more than enough.

From a growth of the sport point of few Clive is spot on. But from a personal point of view I'll love to be able to compete with elbows and mybe something like the Cage rage 'open guard' rule where you can kick to the head trying to pass guard. That would rock!

I did a 10 min round fight with Chris Stringer in the europa, thankly I didn't go that long, I think 3 x 5 mins is better.
