Very interesting thanks! An area id love to get much better at myself as I play in and photograph a few friiends bands. What kind of settings work best for dark pub or club shots, or those with stage lighting? The few gigs I have done have had problems as the flash seems to bright but nobody stays still long enough for longer exposures.

It's a matter of balancing your ISO, aperture, shutter speed and flash really. Try getting a diffuser for your flash if you're using a flashgun, if not, try sellotaping some white paper against your pop up flash.

With proper stages with lighting effects etc, if you can keep your hand steady enough, use about 1/10 to 1/6th of a second if you can get close. You won't need a flash that way, but you're most likely gonna be using 1600iso.

Otherwise go for the diffuser option!

Cool. Have an EOS 300D and no external flash so i think the time for manual and some learning about ISO is needed. :)

the biggest reason for me buying a 50mm 1.8...damn low light pubs ruining my pictures. so just a bit of paper over the pop up flash ya say??? does that take the washed out look from the pics, does it still give you the trail then clean image sorta pic at long shutters?

It helps to take the washed out flat look away alright. If you want the trails, just leave a long (down to a second, any more might wash out the photo completly!) shutter speed along with the flash. The flash freezes the image, and then just move the camera whatever way you want trails.

Gonna have to disagree! A lot of newer bands go for this, I've often been asked to have "the trails going accross" when I'm shooting a band.

I agree with both of you, the trail look can be nice (depending on the band your shooting). But generally, i hate the washed out bleached look that a direct flash gives...

Fajitas! - you have any photos online?

Must go check out this podcast...

I have a FlickR site http://www.flickr.com/photos/fajitasgtr/, but I've only recently gone pro (EDIT:Pro with my FlickR account, not in photography :P), so don't have very much on it, and very few gig shots in it in comparison to what I've taken. I do a lot of gig photography for a band called Gorbachov, and a promoter (OmegaDawn productions).

    Edit: Link should be fixed

Use a Soligar TIF 380 myself, but if you have nothing else, might as well know how to make the best out of it!
