Ok to delete TEMP files?

    Hi,
My C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp folder is taking up over 300MB. Is it ok to delete all these files to free up some space? Don't need the space but just don't want clutter!

Also, for some reason there is a Temporary Internet Files folder in the TEMP folder as well as the Local Settings folder. Why is this?

What's the best way to clear the HD of all clutter and leave only files that are needed? And I know that when files are deleted, passed the recycle bin, they are still stored, does this take up hidden space?

    Any feedback appreciated:)

    Clearing up space.....

When you have sufficenctly cleaned up the drive and emptied the recycle bin, defrag the disk for performance.....

yep, it's safe. chances are a couple of files will be in use, so it may be worth doing it from safe mode.
you can also delete the "$ntuninstall*****" folders inside the windows directory if you're not planning on uninstalling any windows hotfixes, SP2 etc...

    Thanks for hte help.

Well I took the risk and didn't do it in safe mode, I've done a restart since then so I'm guessing it's ok:o

Annoying though, I deleted TEMP and Temp Internet Files, and cookies and did a spyware scan and just a basic clean up, but when I type in b in the address bar of IE, bebo comes up, I don't have it in my favourites and there is no reason it should come up and only about 2 links to it come up, same with j which pops up jesusdressup.com. When I go to the Temp Internet Files folder and check its properties, it says there are 11 files there and they are taking up about 8mb. This is after I deleted all files, did a spyware scan etc etc I have the folder set to show hidden files too so does anyone know what thats about?

Any way to clean up all that crap?

What I use for cleaning up my comp is CCleaner: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
It's fairly small so shouldn't take too long to get. Just run it with default options and it'll get rid of a lot of temp files that you don't need!

Kippy, I've done that but my Temp net files folder is still 7mb when it shows as having nothing in it, and says there is 11 files in it:(

Gouche, any way you could test to see if after using that program, that the Temp net files folder is completely empty before I go downloading it please? :)

    Cormie,
I meant it would resolve the issue where when you typed an address into internet explorer if would automaticilly fill in an address of a site you were already on.....
I would think that the few megs of files you cant seem to delete may be in use.....I wouldnt worry about them,
    Kippy.

There always will be , programs use it when running when windows starts. If you delete them the program wont work till windows next restart.
