No DVD Decoder On Laptop Drive

As stated in the title I'm having problems playing DVDs on the laptop. I downloaded VLC player but when I play dvds using this software it's really jerky. Laptop is a decent spec with P4 processor, 1/2 gig of RAM and standard 64MB GFX card.

Is there any way of getting around this issue?

I've seen various software decoders for sale on different sites, but would rather not pay for one. Can I replace the dvd drive on the laptop with one that has a built in decoder?

    Thx.

PowerDVD or Intervideo have DVD decoders, but they are not free.
Try installing Klite Codec pack, standard one should do the job. Here

I have klite codec pack installed already. That's just a large bunch of codecs like Nimo, with xvid, divx, ac3, etc etc etc etc.

Why would that resolve the issue? They're just used for decoding different audio and video streams. VLC bypasses the need for a dvd-drive wih an inbuilt decoder, but that plays the files really jerkily.

How jerkily exactly? Yeah getting a hold of powerdvd or intervideo should work, Im sure theres freeware ones out there too.
